A hybrid is the offspring of two different species. Hybrids are well known among the animal world, with creatures such as donkorns (a cross between a donkey and unicorn), grizzlars (polar/grizzly bear crosses), and wolfdogs being well known examples. However, sapient hybrids are relatively uncommon.

Sapient Hybrids

Due to the similarities between many sapient species, it has long been posited that hybrids could occur, such as between a human and elf, dwarf and goblin, or varanid and pogon. Such pairings are well known, albeit uncommon, in the Sora. None have been known to naturally produce children, leading most to posit that sapient species are not fertile with one another. There may be some crosses possible which are just extremely rare and unknown in the wider Sora.
However, powerful magic has been known to enable children between those willing and able to go to such ends. This rare magic is so powerful that few have ready access to it. Only the most talented and learned mages are able to harness the arcane prowess necessary and those with the desire to do so arise perhaps once in a lifetime, except perhaps among the Dranomyr Archive. Most interspecies romances are thus fated to be childless.

Spirit Hybrids

On the other hand, spirit hybrids are comparatively commonplace. Most of these arise from the infusion of some spiritual essence into parents or unborn children, but they can arise from the coupling of a spirit and a mortal. These couplings result in a child who takes mostly after their mortal parent, but receives one or two strong traits from their spirit parent. Examples include sinborn from demons, djinnbloods from elementals, and faechildren from fae.
