Djinnbloods, occasionally also known as
genasi, are sapient mortals whose
souls have been infused with one
element to such a degree that they manifest the physical and mental characteristics of it. This elemental infusion can arise from a number of different sources and can potentially affect any sapient species. Djinnbloods resemble their parent species with some physical trait which displays elemental characteristics, such as flaming hair or crackling electricity down their skin. These traits can cause them great consternation or be nothing more than an unusual quirk and public attitudes toward them can be varied.
Origin
Much as their name suggests, djinnbloods are largely birthed from the coupling of a mortal and a djinn or other
protean. This parentage creates an inherent imbalance in the child's body, giving them such a strong affinity for that element that the element manifests physically. There are several less common causes which create djinnbloods, though they are rather poorly known among most of the
Sora. Elemental vortices are the other primary creator of djinnbloods. If a person has lived in close proximity to a vortex for an extended period, they can become infused with elemental essence, which they can then pass on to their children. Alternately, a pregnant person or unhatched egg which remains near an elemental vortex during the entire development time can cause the child to absorb the elemental essence, transforming them into a djinnblood. Other methods which cause similar elemental saturation could create a djinnborn, such as magic to fuse an elemental with a person.
Physical Description
Djinnbloods can come from any sapient species and largely appear like normal members of their kind. However, each djinnblood has a relatively unique trait related to the element they are fused with. This trait is usually fairly obvious, such as an earth djinnblood with stony skin or a shadow djinnblood who has a wispy umbra surrounding them. Most traits are benign and have a minor, if any, affect upon the djinnblood themselves. A few have more significant impacts, such as an acid djinnblood whose saliva is acid or a thunder djinnblood whose steps create loud bursts of sound. These can be positive, providing the djinnblood with a weapon or unique ability, or negative, giving them a flaw or debilitation.
Societal Perception
The way djinnblood are treated varies from place to place. Areas with heavy respect for the elements tend to view them favorably, even those with detrimental traits. In locations where the elements are understood but aren't given much concern tend to have more mixed views, having pity on those negatively affected by their traits, fear for those with dangerous traits, and noncommittal toward the rest. In a few places, notably those which are more superstitious or lacking in understanding of the elements can have far more extreme feelings toward them. In some places they are treated as blessed by the
gods, while in others they are thought to be the spawn of
demons. Often times, their treatment depends on the nature of their traits, with some treated as evil and others good, despite the actual proclivities of the djinnblood themself.
