Eberon

Eberon is nominally a monarchy, but in practice it functions as three almost independent principalities. Each of the three is headed by a prince or princess of the Eber line, who can trace his or her lineage back more than 400 years to Gorboduc Eber, the conqueror who united then-warring clans into a single nation for the first time.   The unification was short-lived and the nation he forged barely survived him. At his death, Gorboduc had four children; three sons and a daughter, Learial, Gornial, Colderia and Reganial. The oldest, Learial, named himself king upon Gorboduc’s death. His reign lasted sixteen hours and ended when his youngest brother Reganial knocked him out with a bronze statue of a fertility goddess and had him spirited away to be kept on Ashgar Island in the great lake “for his own safety” as his brothers and sister fought for control of his lands.   For more than three hundred years they and their descendants warred among themselves, while paying lip service to the true King on the Island, Learial, at first and then each of his heirs in turn. A fragile peace was struck about 80 years ago, which has persisted, and under its terms Gornial's heirs control Glashminik, the smallest part of the country, west of the The Merxes river, bordering with The Dreaded Wastes (Territory) and Empyrea. Colderia's line, which has been matrilineal since her death, controls Ciaran, nearly half the country, on the eastern side of the The Tiphretis, bordering Aerwynn. And the remaining tract, Rhealis, between the rivers belongs to Reganial's people.   Learial’s descendant, the current King on the Island, Sidwell Eber, has the run of the only city on Ashgar, Kingston and the waters of what is now known as the Kingsloch, and truly lives like a king there, but make no mistake: he has no influence over the affairs of the three principalities of Eberon and he is free to leave the island only with the understanding that he will almost certainly never be allowed to set living foot upon the shores of the mainland.
