Maili Settlement in The Savage Woods | World Anvil

Maili

Maili is a small village in northwestern Vaansiam, and the only settlement in Lake Oska. It's situated on the northern tip of the long, thin island of Mailikuan.   The village consists of a cluster of thatch-roofed houses. There is one store in town, which everyone rushes to the day a shipment from central Vaansiam arrives to refresh the stock. It has a one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith, and a cluster of little businesses right along the waterline including a bakery, a carpenter, a tailor, and a post office. A boardwalk was built to add an area to dock to Mailikuan's steep shore, which runs along the length of the village.   In the summer, the lake north of Maili narrows into a broad river that is bursting with crawfish. Maili residents take wooden rafts up the river and spend sunny days catching crawfish and swimming in the shallow, open lake area just north of the river. Most of the crawfish are exported to southern Vaansiam and are one of Maili's primary forms of income, but the rest are eaten throughout the summer. On the first day of summer, the village has a communal crawfish cookout.   100% of the village are ethnically Karuvian and Keitist. Their local druid circle is based on the smaller Alakuan Island just to the east of them.
