King's Guard
The King's Guard is the smallest of the three branches of the Kaleinen military. It consists of the soldiers stationed at the Red Tower and other royal residences. Members of the King's Guard are sworn to protect the king at any cost. Though they are stationed at various buildings, they are in fact assigned to the residents of those buildings, i.e., a handful of them go with the king even if he is going to a fort packed with Rangers.
There are only about 200 members of the King's Guard. They are highly selective and being a member is considered prestigious. Some members join the Guard directly, while others transfer from other branches of the military. Because the Guard primarily lives and works in the castle rather than roughing it on the edge of the Forest, it is often a semi-retirement plan for decorated Rangers.
Beyond their duties protecting royals, the King's Guard also serves as an intelligence gathering agency. This is not their stated purpose and they will deny it if asked directly, but it is common knowledge among Kaleinen nobles that a guard attending a diplomatic dinner with a royal is just as likely to be there to slip away and snoop through offices as they are to protect their charge. The Marshal of the Guard does double-duty as the king's spymaster.
Structure
The head of the King's Guard is titled Marshal. The marshal is always stationed in the Red Tower, and the defence and safety of the castle is their number one responsibility. They typically do not travel with the king, instead staying in the Tower to run the organization.
Other royal residences - such as the homes of members of the royal family who live away from the castle, or estates belonging to the king that he travels to seasonally - are headed by a captain.
50 Guards are stationed at the Red Tower, and the other 100 are split among other residences in groups of 20 - 40.
The Red Tower has 2 captains and 4 lieutenants, each overseeing half of the guards. The other residences have one 1 captain, and between 2 - 4 lieutenants.
