Finding a New Shape Spell in The Savage Woods | World Anvil

Finding a New Shape

Finding a New Shape a complex chant only performed by the most skilled of chanters. It involves transforming a body into that of an animal's. The person's panai and lua remain unchanged, so they maintain their full human intelligence and, if they were to remain in that shape for years, human lifespan.   First the musician needs to find the tune of their own identity, then the tune of the shape they are trying to take, and then the harmony between them. The performance of the music to transform must start with the harmony and transition into the animal's music. It is easier to do this with an instrument, but potential shapeshifters must be warned that they have to repeat the piece in order to change back. If their new form lacks the lips or fingers to play their chosen instrument, they will be stuck until they seek out a musician who can help them.   This chant is very difficult to perform on yourself, and astronomically challenging to perform on anyone else. Transforming into an animal is significantly easier if you're changing into the same animal represented by your tausai. This is the animal form a part of your soul already takes, and the animal your identity is closest too. The same follows for using it on someone else: turning them into their own tausai will be much easier than anything else.   The need to start with the tune of the starting identity is why it is so hard to use on another person. Only the most skilled chanters can work with a common identity of humanity and get any result from it. Additionally, if the person does not consent to having the chant performed on them, their own tausai will resist the magic and try to protect them.   There are cases of chanters managing to use Finding a New Shape on a person against their will, or to turn someone into an animal that is not their tausai, but never both.
