Chanter Profession in The Savage Woods | World Anvil

Chanter

Traditionally, a chanter is anyone who uses magic, but the term has evolved to mean someone with professional training. A person who only practices chanting for themselves or family for free would just be called a musician (as it's very rare for a musician to not dabble in magic at all).   Magic that is needed for the good of the community is often done by druids, who do not charge for their chanting but also will not provide magic without genuine need.   Chanters are expected to learn at least two instruments (from two different families) at the notable conservatories. Beyond that, they either expand their abilities to play a wide variety of instruments, or else study one instrument in depth until they can perform most types of magic even on instruments ill-suited for it.

Career

Qualifications

All countries but Paisai and Manashina require chanters to have a formal education in order to receive money for their services. This is to prevent poorly trained chanters from harming others with improperly done magic.   License to chant can be granted by any conservatory recognized by the government. The most famous of these is the Royal Conservatory of Chanting in Kaleina. The Royal Conservatory, and other prestigious conservatories in other countries, present their graduates with a silver ring to mark their status. The official qualification, though, is a paper license granted by the government.

Payment & Reimbursement

Chanters charge per job. They have free reign to set their own prices and charge what they feel is appropriate for the complexity of magic their client wants. They typically make a comfortable amount of money, comparable to a doctor or lawyer.   A few noble households employ a chanter full time, paying them an annual salary for ongoing magic whenever the need arises.
