Magic

It has many a name in many a culture. Across the Dimensions it is broadly referred to as "magic", the science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with will.

Utility

Magic is often used as a last resort by higher beings or similar entities, who will generally use advanced technology in place of it. Magic is an unpredictable force that is dangerous even to skilled wielders.

Exceptions to the rule of magic use include the Pinnipeds, a seal-like species with a natural proclivity and skill for magic that exists from birth. In their case magic is used for almost every major task, and is accessed via their circular alphabet (used for mundane and ritualistic purposes):

Access & Availability

Magic can only be used by those with a genetic predisposition for it. Spells such as the Hand of the Jinn require natural elements as well as a particular genetic makeup that allows for the manipulation of arcane forces.

Complexity

Magic falls into three broad categories:

Sattvic (White) Magic involves creation, healing, rebuilding or some form of 'order' in its composition (e.g. resurrection spells). Users include creatures such as Monocerotes.

Tamasic (Black) Magic involves destruction, dissolving, deconstructing or some form of 'chaos' (e.g. spells to unbind atoms). Users include creatures such as Red Men.

Rajasic (Red) Magic, also called Blood Magic, is a volatile in-between of good and evil magic, and is the purest and most potent form of magic. Sattvic and Tamasic Magic stem from it, and very few creatures can use it without destroying themselves. The Cosmic Serpents are said to be made entirely of Rajasic Magic.

Discovery

The earliest recorded magic users include Mvvewllyd the Magic Cat, one of the Four Unexplainables. It can be assumed that magic has existed since at least the birth of the Dimensions, if not the entities (e.g. the Entity and their sibling) that existed before.

The first magical item to be made was the Mauling Flute, crafted by the Old Lords of Dwimmercraft (ten cosmic entities slain by the Ogdoad long ago in a great war): Namtar, Allani, Morax, Kerberos, Tl'iish, Semper, Maimoon, Aeshmadaeva, Chavorim and Auziwandilaz. This item could play a frequency that destroyed any who heard it, making it a Tamasic relic.
