Inner Sea
The inner sea is the name for all the salty water between the city of Kalormenos and the western end of the mainland. It streches nearly two thousand miles from east to west and almost a thousand miles north to south at its widest point.
This is not a placeto go around in small boats. The climate of the sea itself and the lands surrounding it is often very wet and storms are common all around the year. While the land close to the shores enjoy a mostly warm climate, the further you go on the water, the colder and crueller the winds become. Many ships have been lost and are never seen again.
Even those that think themselves clever and sail close to the northern borders are not out of peril. The Dark elves living in that land dislike intruders into their realm and they are not the most friendly and forgiving race. With their powerfull magic they have lured many a good captain into the cliffs, that at many places line their land. And then there are the outcrops of the raging mountains. Far out into the sea the reach and to circle around them one has to face the strong western gales that blow there never resting. Alone the passage out of the schadow of the outcrops of the mountains can destroy a ship like breaking a twig if one is not carefull. And after that one has to navigate against the stormy wind through the black cliffs, a dreaded place for sailors. For one wrong move or one blow of wind can be enough to doom the ship and its crew. There is no help out there. It can last weeks or even years for a ship ran into a cliff to be found. By that time every living soul there will have either frozen or starved to death or gone crazy from the howling of the wind.
The southern route is less dangerous. Many settlements can be found all the way from the river delta of the great river to the spit where food and other supplies can be bought. Yet this safety comes at a price. Who ever uses his water road, pays toll near the coasts for the permit of harbouring the ships and the effort of the local authorities to keep the road clear of pirates and other scum. But even this route is no safe one for the weather on the sea is always tricky and also are there some smaller cliffs that can cost the unwary their lives. Of course there are some that wish to evade paying the tolls by sailing further away from the coasts. Those gamble with their lives as those waters are full of pirates and full blown storms rule there.
