Vitat (/'vi:.tɑt/)

Vitat was a member of the speculation fleet bound for Ralcondray in 1980 Volcanic Era, recruited for his uncommon abilities.  After a deadly disease broke out, rendering the fleet's original mission inachievable, he was able as Dancinglight to maintain morale among the survivors.  In recognition of his crucial role in the colony's founding, the first syllable of Vitgrud was taken from his name.

In the immediate aftermath of the sickness, when the remaining crew objected to Grudain's plan to continue to Ralcondray, Vitat was not above taking advantage of the awe he knew tideriders held for Water Seekers.  He threw a shower of spray to get their attention, predicting a disastrous end if they turned back and certain rescue if they made landfall soon.  The brewing mutiny was quelled, and after that the crew viewed him as symbol of good fortune.  From then on he began the practice of wearing the Dancinglight's mantle daily as a visible reinforcement of that belief.
