The Gleaming Peak Myth in The Nordhavyn Isles | World Anvil

The Gleaming Peak

Ever since the first settlers arrived in the Nordhavyn Isles, the Gleaming Peak has drawn curiosity and dread. Located in the center of the Perilous Divide mountain range, it towers above all the other mountain tops. It maintains snow on its upper half year round and has no visible trails leading up the mountainside. At the summit, there is an appearance of a light that is visible for miles and miles. Anyone with a line of sight to the peak can see the light all night long.   This light has almost always been white and as time went on, people mostly forgot about this oddity. However at one point in the winter of year 30, it changed from white to pink and then to blood red over the course of a week. A week later it gradually returned to white. Shortly after this, word came that the volcano on Gateway Isle had erupted and destroyed the city of Tasrod. This was chalked up as a coincidence though until the exact same thing happened again in the year 35. The city of Ik'lenami on Fairisle was destroyed by what was thought to be a dormant volcano.   This latest event cause the king of the Grand Kingdom to send out an expedition in the summer of 36. Unfortunately, nothing was ever heard from them again. Similar expeditions were sent out the following summers but none returned. The last expedition sent was in the summer of 40 and only one man returned. The only intelligible words that could be ascertained were "Don't go back." The peak would continue to shine bright white for many years until the winter of 52 when it went red again and the city of Ghard, the primary city of the Desert Kings, was wiped out in the night.   Decades have gone by with no other incidents. The current generation hear the stories of what happened and many believe they are just stories to frighten children. Most look upon that peak and just expect it to be a white light thinking it is obviously just some polished stone or silver from the elements that is just reflecting the moonlight.
