Rothar the Scorned

Rothar Kinangard

Rothar the Scorned was previously named Rothar Kinangard. His last name was renounced as a sign of shame and indignance on the day of his exile from the Mannaz Tribe.   Rothar grew up in the Mannaz tribe and learned to hunt, track, fish, gather from various members of the tribe. This sense of extended family became a shaping factor of Rothar's personality and led him to grow into a man of character. His caring heart, cause for honor and justice, and courageous heart made him into a adored leader among his peers.   One day, when Rothar was about 13, a Jormun slithered into the village and attacked the Mannaz tribe. Rothar selflessly leapt into the battle against the beast, fighting with more skill and bravery than even some of the adult warriors. He was the one who landed the killing blow on the creature, effectively saving the entire tribe from it's enormous fangs. That day, he had earned the name Rothar Kinangard, and a grand ceremony was held in his honor.   As Rothar grew, his depth of character grew with him and he was found to be in favor with almost every member of the tribe. When the time came to choose a new chieftain to lead them into the future, Rothar was unanimously chosen. A fact which planted a seed of bitterness in the heart of the other potential candiate, Kofa. Rothar's time as chieftain was marked by peace and prosperity. He was regarded as wise and never faltered in displaying his deep care for the tribe. He led the Mannaz well, and never benefited himself before meeting the needs of every member of the tribe.   Rothar was entirely content to live out his days leading his people and loving his family. He named his daughter Alsenya, and she became his ultimate pride and joy. Nothing else could ever fill his heart the way she did. As Alsenya grew she displayed a knack for hunting and bowmanship like her father, and she requested to come with him on the upcoming hunting campaign with her father when she was 16. Rothar hesistated at first, knowing the danger of Asgard's wilds is very real, but he figured as long as he was with her, he could protect her should the need arise. 5 days into the trip, the hunting party accidentally disturbed, a large and particularly aggressive Jorman. It attacked the encampment with such ferocity that the Aesir were left scrambling to defend themselves. Obviously, Rothar fought to defend his men and commanded Alsenya to stay put and wait for him to return. However, Alsenya was too much like her father to do that and engaged in the battle despite her fathers wishes.   Rothar lunged at the beasts head and cut a deep gash straight through it's eye, but was promptly thrown to the side by its tail and crushed between it and the tree. Rothar fell to the ground, disarmed and desperate to catch his breath. Rothar crawled to his knees and looked up just in time to see the Jormun lash at his beloved daughter, crushing her in it's venemous jaws. She fell to the ground limp and bleeding. The Jormun's bite had killed her instantly.   Upon his return, Rothar and his wife went into a deep state of mourning and despair for Alsenya. Rothar's once courageous heart had been shattered, and the light of his life had been snuffed out in an instant. He had always taken disasters like this upon himself, but this time the weight of guilt and shame was replaced by a wrathful bloodlust. Rothar vowed to find that cursed snake that took his daughters life, and placed a Blood Oath upon his chieftains axe. He vowed to that he would neither sip of meade, nor return to his daughter's grave until he could do so bearing the fangs of that wretched monster. Alsenya would be avenged. Rothar's mourning did not relent in the coming months, and it wasn't long before Kofa siezed the oppurtunity to win the hearts of the tribe, and conspire against Rothar. All the love and adoration for Rothar the Aesir had had for him all his life faded into memory, at this, the hour he needed them most. Kofa gathered a band of followers and even convinced the majority of the elders that Rothar's loss had made him incompetent as a leader and unworthy of the position of Chief.   In the dead of night, lit by torches and burning with venegance, Kofa and his supporters gathered at Rothar's door and rennounced him as chieftain. To symbolize his authority being deposed, Rothar's home, his title, and his beloved axe was all taken from him and given to Kofa. However, Kofa was not satisfied to simply usurp Rothar, he wanted him gone. He wanted Rothar to experience the shame he had felt, when Rothar killed that Jorman in his stead, all those years ago. Kofa's very first act as chieftain was to strip Rothar of his name, his tribe, his honor, and exile him from the Mannaz tribe.   After the exile, Rothar's despair turned to fierce anger. He became bitter, selfless, and distant. The deep pain of betrayal and loss left him to be a shell of a man. Not being able to bear the loss herself, and seeing her husband's pain only draw him farther and farther away from her, Rothar's wife left him to face exile alone and went to live with her sister in another Aesir tribe.   For many years, Rothar was left alone with his thoughts. He spent years enraged and hurt. He truly missed his beloved wife, he was tortured by constant memories of his daughter's youth, and nightmare of his death. He called to the Norns, but received no answer. He considered plots to kill Kofa, even if it was just to retrieve his axe and fufill his Blood Oath.   It was in the midst of this anger, that Rothar had his first encounter with "the voice in the wilderness." Although he never saw it, the voice called out to him, it comforted him in his distress, it met him with care and concern and true friendship. It promised him restoration pf the soul, and Rothar felt a warmth in his heart he thought he would never feel again. Rothar is the only one who knows what was said in that fateful conversation, but whatever it was, it opened his eyes to the darkness of his own heart and motivated him to seek healing, not vengeance. Rothar's time in exile did prove beneficial. He released his anger, embraced his sorrows, and found peace on the other side. He was formed into a new man. The voice he had spoken with had fufilled it's promise to restore him and Rothar knew he had not reached this place of healing on his own.   Although in exile, Rothar made a life for himself and settled into a solitary life. he reconnected in secret with those few who had not conspired against him and did what he could to aid the tribe from a distance. It was once Rothar had settled into this life that he again heard the voice calling to him from some unknown place in the wilds. The voice whispered the promise of restoration to him once again but this time, for all the Aesir tribes, for all Asgard, and called Rothar to partner in the endeavor. That night, in a dream, Rothar saw 5 strangers enter through a blinding, swirling light centered in the long dormant Bi frost gate. A voice in the dream repeated the same call he had heard in the forest that day and told him these 5 were chosen to be Champions of Asgard, and would need his help to fufill everything planned for them. Rothar awoke with a start, and continued to ponder this dream over the course of the next few days.   Truth be told, Rothar had no reservations about accepting whatever call this disembodied voice seemed to place on him. It was certainly better than exile. But there were still so many unknowns. So many mysteries. While these thoughts were still in his mind, Rothar heard a whisper in his heart proclaim: "Behold, I am with you always, even unto the end of the age." Apparently, any question Rothar still mattered less than that promise and so, Rothar resolved he would help when the time came. He didn't have to wait long, for on the very next day Rothar heard a rumor that the hunting parties had returned early, and brought with them 5 strangers had randomly appeared in a blinding light in the ruin encampment. The strangers were being held in a guarded cave outside of town until Kofa could decide what to do with them.   The time had come for Asgard to be restored.
