The Devil
The Devil, originally an archangel among God's ranks, was banished to Hell, along with his forces, after a failed rebellion to overthrow his father God. He is the primary antagonist of Journey through the Depths of Hell, though he spends the majority of the book interacting with the main antagonist through his Seven Aspects.
Appearance
When he was an angel, the Devil was most of the attractive beings to exist in the Kingdom of Heaven. After he fell, his six wings were reduced to two, symbolizing him no longer being an archangel, and the wings turned black albeit still beautiful. After spending time in Hell, his appeareance became disfigured. He grew two horns from his forehead and spike on his chin. His wings became bat-like, and his skin turned red.
History
Genesis
In the beginning, God created the Heaven and the Earth. Then, he created mountains, rivers, and seas, and animals and plants on Earth. In Heaven, He made humans—beings who resembled him; immortal, ageless, and sinless—and allowed them to live in the Garden of Eden. He created angels to protect the Kingdom of Heaven and to watch over the humans. Amongst the first angels God created was named ██████, and he played an important role within God's angelic council. While God has the ultimate say in all things on Heaven and Earth, He valued the importance of "free will"; thus, the angelic council was set up as a way to critique God's decision. ██████ was explicitly created to not always agree with God and to tell God how His ways would be perceived by those lesser beings. At some point, ██████ gained the title of "Satan" ("The Adversary") for almost always speaking out against God's decision within the council. After a long time, ██████ became tired of playing the role of Satan and not being able to change God's mind, and he rebelled.
War in Heaven
██████ recruited lower angels to his cause, telling them how he was made to advise God but God rarely takes it, and in not doing so, God created suffering in the world. ██████ wanted to overthrow God and run the world himself. Some of the angels were sympathetic to his cause, feeling sorry for the animals and plants on Earth. Together, they stormed into God's place and demanded that he abdicate and name ██████ his successor. God, already knowing that ██████ would betray him, had archangel Michael gather a fighting force of his own, and Michael's forces arrived to confront ██████ and his allies. Being blessed with additional power by God, Michael and his force quickly dispatched ██████ and his comrades, and as punishment for his arrogance and rebellion, God casted them into Hell, a world he just created from the dark side of the primoridal essence.
Fall to Hell
God turned ██████ and his allies into fallen angels, turning their white wings black and stripping them of most of their powers. ██████ was also stripped of his rank as archangel, losing 4 of his 6 wings, and was renamed "The Devil" ("Ruler of Hell"). ██████ having lost most of his powers took the title of "Satan" as the his new name, determined to stand against God to the better end. In becoming the Ruler of Hell, Satan found he had the powers to create demons, spiritual beings born from the mysterious energy that permeates Hell, and he had these demons build him and his fallen angel comrades a city to live him. Satan grew into his role as Ruler of Hell, but he didn't forget about his grudge against God. One day, he decided that he could try and recruit the humans to his cause. So, shapeshifting into a snake, Satan bypassed the guards of Heaven's Gate and entered the Garden of Eden. There, he tempted Eve to eat a fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil (Adam also ate a fruit after seeing Eve ate it). This led to God placing the Original Sin on Adam and Eve (and all their future descendants), casted them to Earth—thus taking away their immortality, and turned Hell into a firepit where condemned humans would be sent after they die. Of course, this wasn't what Satan had hoped at all; he wanted the humans to gain the required knowledge so that he could manipulate them into joining him in Hell as soldiers in his army. However, now that they have been made mortal and God had Hell a place to punish them, Satan could no longer use them for his army. Thus, Satan returned to Hell, which was now way hotter than it was before, to come up with a new plan. Seeing that the demons were unaffected by the new heat of Hell, Satan asked them to fortify the city where he and the fallen angels were living against the fire. When dead humans started arriving in Hell, Satan selected Azazel to lead the fallen angels in his stead while he left the city to create a place for these condemned human souls, using the demons.
Ruling Hell
As more and more humans came to Hell, Satan had to expand the new settlement created for purpose of punishing humans, and it was becoming more difficult to manage by himself. As Hell grew, Satan also gained power, and eventually his demons became intelligent and were capable of communication. Satan decided that he would begin delegating duties through a chain of command, where he would decide the punishment for the condemned humans and let the demons decided how best to carry out the punishment. For this, Satan split himself and Hell, except for the city of fallen angel, into seven. He then selected 72 demons to help him build New Hell, setting up demon civilization, and letting the top ranks among them serve as ruler of smaller territories. The different incarnations of Satan became known as the "Seven Princes of Hell" or the "Seven Aspects", and New Hell was divided in "Seven Layers."
Plot
Journey through the Depths of Hell
The Devil first appears in Chapter 2 in the book as Satan to John Smith after the human was condemned to Hell.
Powers & Abilities
- Divine body: Because the Devil was formerly an angel, he still retains the basic powers bestowed upon his divine body, such as superhuman physique (strength, speed, stamina, etc.), the ability to fly, the ability to travel between realms and to create and discard a physical body at will as he transits the different realm.[a]
- Demon creation: The Devil was granted the power to create demons from the essence of Hell after he was named its Ruler by God.
Quotes
- "I am known by many names—Satan, Lucifer, Beelzebub, the Father of Lies, the Serpent of Eden—but you may call me ██████." (Journey through the Depths of Hell)
Inspiration & Trivia
- The Devil's backstory is inspired in part by Paradise Lost by John Milton.
Footnotes
- ^ Divine beings usually take on a physical body when coming to Earth so that they can be visible to all beings. A physical body also limits their divine powers on Earth, so that they don't accidentally destroy the world with their powers.
