Spiritual Powers

Spiritual powers refer to the set of abilities and techniques a being can perform using spiritual energy.

Basic Terminology

  • Spiritual energy: The energy contained within the soul of a spiritual being which sustains their existence and the soul of living being which combines with the physical energy of the body (vessel) gives them life.
    • Spiritual pressure: The sensation caused by spiritual energy felt by spiritual beings or human spiritualists.
  • Soul: the nonphysical component of a being which allows for consciousness. From the soul, a spiritual body can be formed around, and the spiritual body can be shaped by the soul. The combination of soul and its spiritual body is called a spirit. Souls are found in all living things (humans or animals) and in some inanimated objects (e.g., watches, rings, weapons, etc.) or as spiritual embodiments of nature (e.g., trees, rivers, mountains, etc.).
    • When a living being dies, the "chain" binding the spirit to the vessel is severed, and the spirit can detach from the physical body. The spirit can then "pass on". However, in some cases, due to strong emotions/attachment to the physical realm, the spirit becomes tethered. At this point, the spirit is also called a ghost, and the thing (e.g., a person, a place, an object, etc.) which it is tethered to is considered haunted.
    • As a ghost remains in the physical realm, their attachment to the thing they haunt grows and their mental state deterroriate, tending towards more base tendencies/instincts. This process is called corruption.
  • Spirit particles: The basic building block of the a spiritual body and the Spirit World (analogous to the atom of the physical world).

Spiritual Sense

Spiritual sense refers to one's sensitivity to spiritual energy. There are varying degree of power/mastery of spiritual sense. One's power/mastery depends on their amount of spiritual energy.

  1. At the first level, it is the ability to feel the presence of spiritual energy, either from a spirit or from a human emanating spiritual energy. This power is possessed all spirits and not uncommon among living humans.[a]
  2. At the second level, one is able to see spirits, that is spiritual beings not within a corporeal body. Living humans who have attained this level of spiritual sense are called spiritualist.[a]
  3. At the third level, one is able to touch spiritual beings while they are not in a corporeal body. While some spiritualists are born with level of ability, others can obtain it through training and increasing their spiritual energy.
  4. At the fourth level, one is able to use spiritual energy to perform supernatural feats, whether inside or outside a corporeal body. There are subclasses within this level that better defines the strength of a spiritual being in terms of their amount of spiritual energy and the magnitude of their spiritual technique.
    • The Black Reaper is able to extend the limits of his spiritual energy into a technique called Spirit Sight (Zh: 精靈眼, Mandarin: jīnglíng yǎn, Cantonese: zing1 ling4 ngaan5; Ja: 精霊眼, seireigan), where he is able to visualize the amount of spiritual energy possessed by a being and the color of said energy. If this is a living being, then the energy will also be flickering with faster frequency indicating greater life force.

Spirit Arts

Spirit arts is analogous magic but only requires spiritual energy to perform. The most common examples of spirit art are exorcism techniques used by the Catholic Church.
