Moyakiro (mo.jaˈki.ro)

"And we walked through a land of fire and gold, drawn by the smoke that sang, until we climbed from the maw of Moyakiro and came to Golowu."
— from a record of the Ngofangare's journey to the Great Ring

Moyakiro is the volcano that is the highest point on the island of Golowu. According to Ngofangare legend, it was the point from which they entered the Great Ring, summoned there by the rituals of the Nakaal. They retell the story of their journey to and through the volcano regularly, and many of their folk tales feature journeys back to Jiwa Samai, the land within the volcano. In Jiwa Samai, the sky is always dark and smokey, but the land glows like a fire. Rivers of liquid silver and gold wind across the bright landscape, while birds black as char wheel overhead, never landing. Trees grow along the river banks, with leaves of fire flickering on their branches. Throughout Jiwa Samai can be heard the song of the smoke, which conceals and decieves and tricks the heart, luring the unwary into mortal peril. This smoke was what enchanted their ancestors at the Nakaal's behest, and it still lingers and waits for those brave enough to venture into the land within the volcano.

Notable Spirits

The Hyang of Moyakiro is called Maradika, the king in the smoke. He is the lord of Jiwa Samai, and the mountain is his body in the Physical realm. He is an avid observer of the people on the island, and has the power to peer from every flame and hear wherever smoke drifts. Throughout the history of the Ngofangare, Maradika has lurked in the background, aiding his favorites and hindering those he does not approve of. His opinions can be hard to predict, but he generally shows his favor to those who live interesting and heroic lives. He will bestow powers upon those he most favors - they may be unharmed by fire, or have the ability to vanish like smoke. When these favored people perish, Maradika draws their Eidolons into Jiwa Samai, and the Ngofangare have many tales of great heroes who have gone to serve Maradika as semi-divine beings after death.

Geography

Moyakiro dominates the southern end of Golowu, looming over the most populated section of the island. It has not erupted since the Ngofangare have settled there, but frequently emits smoke and vapors. These are dangerous to breathe, as they are known to induce hallucination, and more than one person has fallen to their deaths after inhaling them.

The lower slopes are covered in dense tropical rainforest, with a rocky cone rising out of the trees to a final summit a little over a mile high. Fissures and chasms are found all over the mountainside, and the mountain shudders from time to time, shaking everything for miles around.

The legend of Moyakiro and Jiwa Samai is incredibly evocative! The imagery of glowing rivers, fiery trees, and the ever-present song of the smoke makes the setting feel both mythical and perilous. Maradika’s role as an unpredictable, omnipresent spirit adds an intriguing layer of mysticism—especially the way he grants gifts to heroes. The description of the toxic vapors inducing hallucinations is a fantastic touch, reinforcing the eerie, otherworldly nature of the volcano. I’d love to see even more stories of those who braved Moyakiro and returned… or didn’t!

Thanks! I will definitely be expanding on this more as I develop out the Dreamlands - Jiwa Samai is one of the dreamscapes I hope to thoroughly explore.

Jiwa Samai sounds like a beautiful place. Scary, but beautiful. I can feel the sacred-ity (I cannot think of the proper word right now) oozing out of this volcano.
