Lamagama (la.ma.ɡa.ma)

"Lamagama isn't one of your tame, placid, docile volcanos like you get on Golowu. Ours will actually erupt, not just spit out some foul-smelling vapors!"
— an overly and unwisely competitive Mangimoi resident of Gotugimoi

Lamagama is the volcano at the heart of Gotugimoi. It can be seen from the entire island, and the locals regularly proclaim it the most beautiful and dangerous mountain in the area. They claim that the mountain likes to hear its praises, and that going too long without flattering the mountain risks an eruption.

In the last century, Lamagama has been erupting more frequently, with three eruptions in the last fifteen years. During these events, the mountain rains ash and debris across the entirety of Gotugimoi, sometimes reaching several inches deep. Earthquakes have been common, and there are some regions of the island prone to landslides and lahars. Despite all this, the Mangimoi continue to frequent the area close to the mountain, especially a series of natural hot baths which are said to cure diseases if one can endure them for long enough.

Notable Spirits

Lamagama is the body of the Hyang known as Gurulani. He is the father of the winged Bibibari spirits who inhabit Gotugimoi, and is extremely protective of them. The Mangimoi believe that Gurulani is very vain and short-tempered, and that he is always listening to what the people are saying, especially if they mention his name. It is considered very unwise to say anything negative about the mountain or its eruptions, and sometimes they will even praise the aesthetics of an eruption, or exclaim at how thick and deep the ash has fallen as though it were a wonderful thing. According to the residents, Gurulani hears these compliments, and it puts him in a good mood, and he instructs his daughters to reward the people for their clear-sightedness and good judgement. The Bibibari then repair as much of the damage their father's eruption caused as they can, with particular attention to assuring clean water and good crops in the years after an eruption.

Geography

Lamagama is a large, conical mountain reaching over 5,600 feet in height. The slopes are covered in forests, with the foothills mostly converted to clove plantations. The mountain is relatively easy to climb, and there are many hot springs and geysers in the area.

I'm laughing at someone being so competitive about how dangerous their volcano is, lol. It does sound like a beautiful place, though, with the hot springs, geysers, and clove plantations.

It's a lovely island, and I knew you'd find their competitiveness entertaining :)
