Sailspace

Created by Spyglass
Sailspace is one of the elemental-aligned systems within the The Maelstrom, aligned most closely with the element of water. Its people were the first to achieve weftsail technology, a mode of space travel so far unique to the cultures of the Maelstrom. Sailspace is a system with six planets and their many moons orbiting a white-yellow sun, ten of which bear life on their surfaces and almost all of which are inhabited.

Geography

Sailspace consists of a central white-yellow dwarf star, called Aegea by the locals, and six major planetary bodies that orbit it at varying distances. The system also has three major debris fields: the Isles of Steam between the sun and Mirage, the living Reef between Proteus and Stormtide; and the icy Drift beyond the orbit of Haedal. All of the major bodies have at least one moon, often more. The system's nominal habitable zone extends from 2 AU to 3.7 AU, and contains the Reef and five planetary bodies that support life: Proteus, Sargasso, and the three major moons of Stormtide. Life also exists on Halia in the form of simple extremophiles, and on Stenophor as complex exotic biochemistry. Legends claim that something monstrous lurks beneath the thick methane fog of Kraken, but no scientific expedition has yet verified this claim.   Sailspace is most notable for its enormous and vibrant debris ring, called the Reef, composed of asteroids covered in living coral that all share an atmosphere and ocean under their collective gravity. The Reef, with a surface area millions of times greater than the surface of an average habitable world, is home to hundreds of civilizations and billions of species. Countless artificial objects and natural formations dot the fathomless expanse of the Reef, including untold numbers of shipwrecks, ruins, and secret pirate treasure stashes. Notable locations include the dry-land archipelago of Calypso, the glimmering translucent spherical world-shell called the Pearl, a port called Whalefall made from the remains of several dead kindori, and the Trench -a lightless channel at the center of the Reef that carries a cold nutrient-rich current.

Ecosystem

Sailspace is home to an incredible diversity of life across nearly a dozen planets and moons. This staggering array of ecosystems includes a large number of sapients, some closely related to the other species of The Maelstrom and a few related to the beings of The Radiant Triangle, but most only native to Sailspace itself.

Creator's Note

This was a very fun one to build, and opens a lot of interesting doors. Based very loosely on Aquaspace from the Spelljammer 3e Database.
