Demarra City

One of the largest trade hubs in the March sits not on a coast or a river, but under the waves of the Ahventiel Ocean. Demarra city is a cosmopolitan wonder, bridging the worlds above and below the ocean, and is the main hub for anyone doing business between the two. Some of the surface people who have visited Demarra call it the New Caliber of the sea, but Demarrans would reply that no, New Caliber is the Demarra City of the land. Founded originally by aventi refugees, the merfolk population now is even larger. Any water dwelling race can be found here, and quite a few others who have come to buy and sell nearly everything imaginable. What the city doesn't allow in trade can be found in the practically open black market. Perhaps more than anywhere in the world, anything can be found for sale in Demarra.

History

The city-state was founded centuries ago after the Aventi civil war. One of the rebel leaders, Lady Demarra, decided she could not remain, and she and her followers left to found a new life. They chose a wide ocean valley, and using contacts and allies made in the fighting, called on other races of the Ahventiel for help in building their new home. The location placed the new refuge at a perfect trade intersection along the ocean currents, and within a few decades a cosmopolitan city had been established, with members of nearly every undersea race present. Demarra City is now the largest known undersea city. It has become the primary link between the nations below the waves and the ones above, complete with a floating trade district for surface travelers and merchants, and a coral lighthouse tower that rises above the waves.
