American

Very few ethnic groups among the Terrans seem to attract as much attention as the Americans. This people, living on the continent of North America on Earth, have a huge cultural effect on the rest of Terran society. Their news is the world's news, and their densely-populated cities are among the largest on the planet. A very significant number of Earth's Sanctuaries are clustered in American cities as Americans begin to dip their toes into the exploration of the rest of the multiverse.

History

The Americans owe their language and origins to the British Isles, with whom they share a language. This is, apparently, in opposition to the "Native Americans," a collection of indigenous ethnic groups that inhabited the land before the arrival of the English-speaking Europeans. Very little of this native culture has survived, as the English-speaking Americans wiped out many tribes and replaced their cultures with their own. Many of these indigenous cultures were interested in mysticism and magic, which is interesting as magic is a relatively recent arrival on Earth.   The American nation, the United States of America, owes its creation to a collection of British colonial politicians who rebelled against the monarchy of their home nation and created their own democratic nation after many bloody wars. Despite one large civil war around the time that magic first arrived on Earth and a couple of worldwide conflicts in the decades since, Americans have lived in relative peace and security to many other Terran nations. However, many recent developments in the political sphere appear to be destabilizing the United States of America, leaving its future shrouded in mystery. Many mages worry that demons might take advantage of the growing instability to invade the nation or the world at large.

Cultural Exports

Americans are most known for their culture, despite their admittedly strong effect on the military and scientific aspects of Terran society. American media forms such as television (a sort of play or performance that can be distributed instantly to anyone owning the right kind of device) are ubiquitous to other Terrans. The Internet, that digital platform for information transfer at speeds unheard of without magical help, was first put into practice in America and English is the dominant language used for programming it. Even their food, known for its grease and its multicultural nature, has been found in far off places throughout the world and even multiple shops on Limbo. Simply put, American culture is a powerhouse that smaller nations simply don't have the resources to combat effectively, and the rest of the multiverse appears to be equally unprepared.

"Land of the Free"

Many Americans believe the adage listed above, which dates from early in the nation's history. The truth appears to be a little more complicated, as American mages often report something much the opposite. The American government spends more on defence than any other nation despite being quite rarely at war on any large scale. Government surveillance in various channels and the presence of well-funded police forces in all cities gives a feeling of scopophobia to any visitor.
