Fungal Disease

This fungal strain was first discovered in Colony 1. It is unknown how exactly it penetrated the colony, the surviving machines had several theories but no concrete proof.
The disease is a novel strain not previously seen in the galaxy. Thus the remaining settlement has no defense against it, either vaccine or treatment to halt or even slow its spread. Not much is understood about its origins or its development. It spreads through spores released by mature growths, which can take root in soil or flesh with equal ease.
After the fall of the first colony, the growths around the aarea became so sick it began to be referred as a forest. Colony 2 had to learn to slow the growth of the forest while trying to discover a cure. They have to do this without the resources from the first colony or the rest of the Empire, as the planet is quarantined and no one is allowed to leave left the disease spread to other planets.
At the start of the story, Zi is one of the few willing to go into the forest, wearing PPE, to gather samples for scientists and researchers who either can't or won't enter the dangerous area themselves. Though they are a minor no one turns down their offer, because it's essentially mercenary work, PPE is limited, and researchers are often too afraid of infection to get samples themselves.
