Evil: It started with Jealousy

A Dragon's Soul: Chapter 5

Written & Illustrated by: Rick Merriman
As The One forewarned Siberlee, it was a very slow process to teach the young Dragons to speak. She spent most of her time each day in that pursuit. The Dragons grew massive during the many Seasons it took to learn even a few words. Though both Dragons learned, it was the younger of the two, Kalos, who became the most accomplished. Not only did he speak, but he was far more intelligent and grasped concepts Kellium did not understand, or at least did not care to understand. Despite this, Siberlee loved them both dearly and spoke regularly of their progress to the other Gods and Goddesses.   Barak, her lover, though not the pure evil he would one day become, became jealous. For Traejen, the God of Strong Emotions, had already introduced that dark concept by that time. There is much historical significance to Barak’s reaction to the race of Dragons. Though many argue Barak did not become evil until he lost his soul to create the Race of Man of Man, many believe the creation of Dragons was the seed for the path to evil Barak would soon begin.   It started with Jealousy.

Barak wanted the time Siberlee spent with the two dragons to be spent with him instead. Whenever Siberlee could not hear what he said, and even sometimes when she could, he would belittle the speaking Dragons and refer to them simply as “reptiles.” He particularly enjoyed making fun of the male Kalos and his raspy disjointed speech patterns. He did this with the charm and charisma he is known for, so it would not appear hurtful to the other Gods.   But, of course, it was.   In a very short time, Barak was able to sabotage the speaking Dragons without it sounding petty or malicious. Thus he turned the Gods’ favor away from Kellium and Kalos, subconsciously, if by no other means.   As is documented in countless later accounts, Barak absolutely abhorred Dragons, back then and even to this day. The Scribes and Sages who know of such things believe Siberlee’s obvious love of Kalos was the beginning of his irrational hatred of the Race. Though there is no proof or resource to determine if this is true, it is thought by the Scholars who reflect on such things, that Barak came up with a plan to rid Mernac of Dragons. If true, it would be the First Murder to be perpetrated on Mernac.
