A Dragon is Born

A Dragon's Soul: Chapter 4

Written & Illustrated by: Rick Merriman
The young Goddess memorized both quickly and before the next morn, she had already shared the mystical words and spell with her lover, Barak, and her sister, Sola.   It was Sola who first used these powers.   It had all begun because Siberlee desired a creature who could speak, to be born on Mernac, and Sola knew Siberlee always had a very particular creature in mind. “Tell me, Sister,” she asked Siberlee, “tell me exactly what manner of creature you desire this to be?”   In great detail The Mother of Nature then described to Sola a pet she had as a child, before she ascended. The creature was not unlike the small scampering lizards Sola had already created and placed on Mernac. However, by the way Siberlee described it, this new creature would be far larger.   “It should be like those lovely Fitz Lizards you created, sister. You remember, it was the day we also created the reflections that lay across still water,” she told Sola. “This creature should be smooth of skin and cool of blood if I recollect my dreams of childhood correctly. Unlike your lizards, they will have teeth, massive teeth as they hunt for their food. Yes, I definitely remember as a girl my mother telling me they ate meat. Mind you, they were still quite gentle of nature, so there will be naught to fear. Their tongue is black and rough like fieldstone, that I am sure of. I remember it tickling me. Oh, and it is forked.”   “They will have a tail, and that tail will be long - very long... with tassels of hair at the end. Of color, I think they can have a range, any hue from Green to Brown is good… or even red on rare occasions. Four legs I think… and wings. Leathery like those of a bat. Yes, this creature should certainly be able to fly.”   So with all this in mind, with the incantation, and the secret spell, Sola created Dragons that very day.

As for Siberlee and Barak, who both also knew the secret of granting speech - according to several sources in The Great Library of Hob, unlike Sola, they did not use the power until many thousands of Seasons later.   As most know from the fable, Siberlee and the Golden Seven, Siberlee eventually used the spell on Hooloo, the lion, to help create the Race of Furs. As for Barak, the God who would eventually become the Father of Darkness?     How he used the spell is still a well-guarded secret, even to this day.
It is, however, thought by the Scribes and Sages who know of such things, that Barak somehow perverted the spell The One gave, and with the help of Roadius discovered how it could be used again, and again, and yet, again. This may explain how his Race of the Undead can rapidly propergate after feeding... even without needing a mate.   It certainly explains how Roadius was able to spawn so many different varieties of Half-man, half-beast atrocities the Father of Mischief created when trying to perfect The Race of Gnomes

But for Sola, the first time the gift was used was to create Dragons. To do it, she knew she must start with an egg. Sola took a ruby, the size of two fists put together, and transformed it into a fertile reddish egg of the same size and hue. As she did, she cast the spell and uttered the secret incantation The One had shared with Siberlee the night before. And then…   They waited.   And… They waited.   And…They waited.   It is said, the two sisters waited for what may have been an entire Season, or it may have been 1000 Seasons, as the peculiar habit of measuring time had yet to be conceived. Eventually, however, the egg broke with a force from the inside, and soon new life emerged.   To the sisters' surprise, there were two who emerged from the egg, not one. The first who broke out of the egg Siberlee promptly named Kellium, a strong female Dragon. A few moments later Kellium’s slightly larger brother Kalos emerged.   Though where the names actually came from is still hidden in the mist, it is rumored Siberlee named them after here older sister and younger brother from back when she was still mortal.
