The First Murder

A Dragon's Soul: Chapter 7

Written & Illustrated by: Rick Merriman
In the darkest of dark, on that very dark night, they left the Heavens and sneaked into the cave which was the lair for the Dragons. They found Kellium sleeping. Kalos was nowhere in sight. Though Barak had hoped to find them both in the land of dreams for his plan to work, he proceeded without hesitation and with a new fervor.   Roadius secretly revealed to his sister, Kanola, many millennia later that Barak’s eyes began to glow red with blood lust upon entering the cave. This intensified when he saw how defenseless and vulnerable the sleeping Dragon was. The two found Kellium laying on her back exposing her soft underside. Her skin was smooth and vulnerable, for this is before dragons had scales, and many think it is the reason they learned to grow them.   Barak took out the only item that The One and The Other allowed him to bring to Mernac when he became a God - The Blade of Volition. Though the dagger had always been used for good when Barak was mortal, that was not its destiny that night. He plunged the dagger deep into Kellium's’s heart. As he did, the goodness which permeated the dagger from its famous usage began to evaporate and left a cavity in the hilt. It is this hollow that would one day become the home of Shyla the imp. Though how she came to live there is still a well guarded secret.   As Kellium’s green blood ran down her chest, Barak’s brother, Roadius, cringed in horror. staring at Barak’s red eyes and manic state. This was not the Barak he thought he knew and loved. This was a changed Barak. Roadius was flabbergasted, he thought Barak was simply going to play some mischievous trick, not murder.   Barak commanded Roadius to crush all seven of the Dragon eggs. Dumbfounded and bewildered by Barak's violent behavior, Roadius obeyed his brother and stomped on the eggs.   All but one.   For a reason unknown, even to himself, Roadius could not destroy all the eggs.   Much later when he recounted the event to his sister Kanola, Roadius told her:
I am not sure why I did not crush them all, but something stopped me, and instead, I hid one in my shirt, when Barak was not looking.

Roadius' Shame by Rick Merriman
This act of mercy may be the reason Dragons to this day accept and often even defend Roadius’ patron race, the Gnome's. For had he not done this, there would be no Dragons today.   After they were done Barak made Roadius swear that he would never tell anyone their secret, and they returned to Mirdoren where the other Gods and Goddesses slept, not knowing either of them had ever left the heavens.
