They were Sheep not Gods

A Dragon's Soul: Chapter 11

Written & Illustrated by: Rick Merriman
“Kalos, it is so good to see you,” Siberlee’s sweet voice brought him out of his reverie as she entered the courtyard on hearing the shouting. “What brings you here? I was so worried, you have not met with me for many days for our lessons”   “Kellium Dead. Egg Dead. God Kill.” Kalos sputtered through his grief.   “It seems, my love,” Barak explained in a tender tone, without any of the arrogance and disdain he had employed before Siberlee’s arrival. “This poor creature’s mate has been killed and the eggs of his unborn children crushed. He unfortunately thinks that one of the Gods or Goddesses is responsible. I have tried to reason with him…but...”   Kalos turned his head upward and opened his mouth. A ball of flame shot from his mouth towards the sky.   “I tried to warn you about befriending a beast…” Barak said to Siberlee and the other Gods with a hint of his disdain reinstated, “and now the reptile appears to have a new power. That makes him even more dangerous than we originally thought.” His voice became a hushed whisper, “We may have to do something about him for our own safety.” Many of the Gods in the courtyard nodded in agreement with Barak.   “Oh Kalos, I am so sorry” Siberlee uttered, oblivious to Barak’s words. She ran to the Dragon’s side, tears welling up in her sky blue eyes as she put her arms around her friend. “How could this of happened? You must be devastated. What can I do?”   Even with the wanting and needing of Siberlee’s symphony sympathy and love, Kalos did not respond to her. Barak’s earlier words stuck in his ears.   “Know egg crushed?… how know you this?” he asked Barak. For Kalos had not mentioned the manner in which the eggs had been killed, none but Kalos or the perpetrator could have known this.   It is said that there was a pause for an instant, or it may have been a thousand instances. It is well known that among his many powers, Barak can stop time, and most scholars of Dragon lore feel he did so then.   “They were eggs. What other way could an egg be killed but to be crushed.” Barak finally replied.   There was a murmur of agreement throughout the courtyard as most of the Gods and Goddesses had now gathered at the commotion.   “How can we help you Kalos?” The now charming Barak continued softly. “We want to help in any way we can. For your loss, is our loss.”   Kalos did not reply immediately but rather he gazed at Siberlee and all the Gods who gathered around their leader, Barak. Some placed a hand on Barak’s shoulder, others nodded in agreement, all seemed inspired by the compassion the leader of the Gods had shown to the Dragon.   Watching all the Gods surround and comfort Barak, not himself - not the one who had suffered the loss - Kalos knew that he had already lost a battle that had yet to begin.   Eons later, when recounting the incident when he became friends with the Faes, he told [Sara DragonMist],   They were sheep, not Gods.   Kalos, The Fire Dragon As recounted to Sara Dragonist many Seasons Later Tovil 15th, 665 AM
