Confronting Your Gods

A Dragon's Soul: Chapter 9

Written & Illustrated by: Rick Merriman
Barak, Roadius, BU, and Quont were playing with Roadius’s newest toy, a bent tree branch with a string stretched between the ends. Roadius was able to propel a straight stick from the device flung forward by the tension of the taut string. His brothers were trying to see which of them were the most accurate at hitting a target with sticks propelled by the device. According to many sources in The Great Library of Hob it was on this day the first bow and arrows were created on Mernac.   Kalos, who was usually quite inquisitive about such things, had no interest in the toy that day, or the patience to wait until the foursome of Gods were done with their play.   “Wheryest ist Sibe the lee, be. Thou wils some spek it now!” he shouted at them boldly.   Barak, who was pulling back the string on the new toy laughed loudly at Kalos’s still primitive speech, but otherwise ignored him completely.   Though Kalos had learned much, his speech was still very disjointed and broken in those early times. It would not be until he met the Fae, Sara Dragonmist, thousands of Seasons later, his speech was perfected to that of being the grand orator he is now known to be.   “I told Siberlee that her pet reptile would never be able to speak properly,” Barak told his brothers, still ignoring the Dragon and speaking as if Kalos was not there. “She is wasting her time with that one.”   His brothers all laughed heartily, for Barak was their elder brother, leader, and lately they had found it wise to always laugh when he made a joke. The exception was Roadius whose eyes could not seem to leave the ground from the moment Kalos arrived.   “Sibr now!” The Dragon rasped with a trickle of smoke escaping his nostrils. The heat was beginning to build again.   “Watch who you are speaking to, retile,” Barak barked back at him, “and the tone you use when speaking to us. Forget not, we are your Gods.”  Kellium Dead, Egg Dead, Who you of, make dead her. Who go cave be of Kalos?   “None of the Gods have left the heavens for a moon,” Barak retorted at the implication. “Mernac now bores us and we spend little time there,” Barak continued with a vicious snarl. “And just who do you think you are, demanding like that? You are but a lizard, a simple creature that we, in fact, created - and what are you trying to imply, lowly reptile?” What? That it was one of us?”   Kalos stared at the God intently. It was quite clear to all, that was exactly what the Dragon was implying.   “Though it may not have been a bad idea if it had happened,” Barak said with a cold smile, “and impregnating your own sister would be reason enough in the world I came from... No. No, It is nonsense. The Gods did not do this thing.”   Kalos could feel the burning in his belly and lungs intensify and knew that soon he would need to let out the fire again.   “Be happen how then?” he asked as swirls of smoke began escaping his nostrils.
