Demonkind
By many civilizations, they are referred to as monsters. Sometimes seen as manipulative devils and other times as raging beats, there is no simple way of defining demonkind. In truth, what many refer to as demons, is not simply one species. Rather, demons are those who originate from the abyss and have separated themselves from the chaos in order to evolve further in the scorching lands of the underworld. Certain schoolers, therefore, define the term demon as an origin rather than a species. Although this definition seems rather fitting, it does leave out a set of commonalities that can be found among various kinds of demons. Regardless of a demon's intelligence, size, power, or anything else, they all possess a chaotic nature. Additionally, they lack a certain sense of selflessness, making it rare for demons to cooperate, even if they are intelligent. They do, however, gravitate to a strong hierarchy, where the less powerful are quick to serve those with great power. Demons also tend to be attracted to negative energy, seeming to have a strong affinity with it and, according to some, being able to feed off such dark powers.
Territory
Although demonkind has historically inhabited the entirety of the underworld, when Hades arrived to claim his domain, he banished most of demonkind to live in Asmodeus. This, however, brought with it a significant problem. Although there are few passageways from the underworld to the mortal realm, most of them preside in Asmodeus. So, with the land being far more populated by demons than ever before, plenty of them made it to the overworld and incursions became a far more regular occurrence. With the number of demons escaping from Asmodeus, a part of the mortal world became corrupted turning into what is now known as The Ashlands. A solution to the escaping demons eventually came when Arenez was selected to act as a warden to the demons. Yet, with the eventual imprisonment of Arenez, demons were once again able to escape to the realm above, repopulating the Ashlands.Classification
There are a great number of demon species, too many to mention. Instead, a simplification is used for classification. This involves a set of two properties. Firstly, intelligence. Under this grouping fall two classifications:- Feral Demons: These are the demons that are more akin to beasts than anything else. They usually roam around with no particular purpose other than feeding. These types of demons are regarded as the animals of demonkind, although none of them can be seen as non-predatory. Feral demons are especially attracted to dark powers or negative energies. This supports the theory that demons can feed off such things.
- Intelligent Demons: Those who fall under this description have the ability to display higher thought. It is more common that those who are counted among the more powerful demons are intelligent. Additionally, intelligent demons are able to utilize magical power on a higher conceptual level, unlike feral demons who can only on occasion use simplistic spells.
