Sunken Ruins

The Sunken Ruins were once temple fortresses built by Kusatta the Bloodied's first coven of Dark Shamans. Hidden in the dense, lush jungle swamps from the iron fists and watchful gazes of the Ak'teshi Empire, they served as the epicenter and staging ground for Kusatta's own war against the Empire during the War of Broken Chains, as while the jungle swamps were lush and lively, they soon became rife with death and decay under the influence of his coven. These practices grew so intense that the jungle withered away, ripping a wound through the veil to Blacklands beyond.   After the war, and Kusatta's subsequent banishment, the temples soon fell to decay and disrepair, gradually reclaimed by the decaying swamps.   Thousands of years later, these temples were soon rediscovered by the followers of Bronne Farrikson, also called 'Bronne the Blackened'; the last vestiges of High King Nogduur Ashbight's most loyal followers after they fled the Silver Kingdom when the shamed tyrant King was overthrown. While Bronne was the right hand of Nogduur, and his personal smith, still many saw within him a continuation of Nogduur's legacy.   Loyal to the ideals of Kusatta, Vauldis, and the Awakened, Bronne and his followers rebuilt and expanded many of the temples, digging out and constructing a great network of underground tunnels and crypts beneath the Blighted Swamps. Soon, these once ruined temples became the undercity of Mortholme.   As his following grew, disparate outcasts of dwarven society flocked to him to learn the darkest secrets of rune-crafting. In this isolated dwarven stronghold, flung far from the rest of his kin in Meyland, Bronne Farrikson became Runelord of Mortholme, and harbored bitterness for the rest of his kin beyond the swamplands. Soon, he began to experiment with necromancy, weaving it throughout his teachings and expertise in rune-craft. He created dark runes that could imbue foul curses, runes that could animate the dead, and runes that could extend his life far beyond its natural limitations.   Eventually, over a century and a half, since he had escaped to the Morbog, his rule came to an abrupt end, and the undercity followed suit in NC. 350. Very little is known of what happened to the dark Runelord and the undercity of Mortholme, but it is rumored that the city suffered a devastating invasion.   Since then, much of the undercity has collapsed, flooded, or fallen to disrepair, forever lost or rendered inaccessible to those foolish enough to delve into the undercity's labyrinthine depths. The subterranean areas of these sunken ruins unblemished by time are rife with history, dark magics, and mysterious untold treasures.
