Blacklands

The Reflection of Shadow

The Reflection of Shadow, true to its namesake is a realm reflecting aspects of shadow. To many, this may put both its mirror realms in an evil light. Not so, as the shadow is merely a natural aspect of the world. The inhabitants of this reflection may embody shadow, but depending upon which mirror they are from, they may either be friendly, indifferent, or hostile to travelers.   It is an ever-changing realm that exists beyond reality, but also overlaps with it, much like the Reflection of Fey, There is no sunlight, and both mirrors experience a persistent night.   Like the Reflection of Fey, The Reflection of Shadow represents a possible world had the circumstances been different, either through lawful or chaotic circumstances. The Reflection of Shadow depicts a world without the interference of civilization and light, suffused with dark Magic both benevolent and malevolent in nature.

The Blacklands

The origins of the Blacklands remain uncertain, but they have existed ever since mortal life first came to the physical world. They are described as a nightmarish realm of decay; a spiritual realm teeming with the souls of the malevolent dead who have passed from the world of the living. Many believe that mortal souls are drawn into this place at the point of death, where they remain forever after. Still, others hope that their souls will go on to a brighter place, rather than languish for eternity within the cold confines of the Blacklands   The Blacklands can be described as grey, dark, swirling clouds above a barren waste. Others describe it as an endless void of black, unable to see anything, but able to hear people in the physical world.   The most striking and immediate impression a visitor to the Blacklands may experience is the lack of color and light; no sun, moon, or stars adorn the vault of the inky black sky, and all things look colorless. The realm is filled with flakes of ash that drift in the air instead of falling like snow.   Any light source is dimmed and flames and fires put out less heat, The only natural light comes from the sickly black and red leylines of death and blood magic that criss-cross the blackened skies, unbound by natural law. Eldor hypothesized that the red hue came only with the introduction of necromantic tampering by mortals at some point. Nobody is quite sure of its original hue. Many necromancers have since then utilized the magic of this realm to their own ends.   There is no water to be found. The only naturally occurring liquids are pools of blood occasionally scattered across the landscape.   The creatures of the Blacklands are suffused with death and blood magic; Ghouls, Ghasts, Banshees, Wights, and more undead roam the barren, lifeless landscape. The only forms of life native to the Blacklands are twisted, brackish black trees called Wailing Willows whose roots stretch far, far beneath the realm. They get their names from the twisted faces within the bark and the sounds of wailing souls trapped within their eternally-decaying trunks. This is the eventuality of all wandering souls.
