Ulysses "Ollie" Dylos

In stark contrast to his heroic namesake from The Odyssey (seeing as his name in Greek means "reviled coward"), Ollie is the self-obsessed NASA commander whose ineptitude and pursuit of glory stranded the Odyssey-Nine and its crew deep in the Hellecian Sector.

He now resides onboard the Psygorellius as second-in-command to AJM-001 using his inventive mind along with the ability to emit/diffuse Cosmic Aurora to get back home to his wife NASA Director Penny Pavona with the proof he needs to make him the greatest astronaut since Neil Armstrong.

Origins:

Born in Grand Junction, Colorado on August 1st, 1989; Dylos was encouraged by his park ranger mother and his airlines pilot father to live a life of exploration. Fostering his fascination with the stars and dreaming of the day when he could become an astronaut.

However, after a near death experience canoeing with friends on the Lower Gunison River, his distrust of people and fear of failure would be the catalyst that'd kickstart his Odyssey into the Hellecian Sector.

Dylos enlisted in the Air Force to pay for college, eventually earning a Major in Aerospace, Aeronautical & Aeronautical/Space Engineering & a Minor in Materials Engineering from MIT. It's from his Aerospace program that he would meet Penny Pavona: the one responsible for him staying in school to achieve his dreams of being an astronaut and the only other person Dylos trusted.

Dylos and Penny held out for jobs at NASA. Tragedy struck when Dylos' student loan officer increased his monthly payments and with his Dad losing his pension from the airlines and his mother's lung cancer diagnosis. Dylos couldn't wait for NASA and took a job as a Materials Engineer for 3M back in Colorado.

Over the next years, Dylos became bitter as his dreams of becoming an astronaut became slimmer the longer he was out of college. Until one day, Penny (now NASA missions director) found Dylos in Grand Junction and gave him an offer of a lifetime: improve your cockpit time, meet with the review board and become a new astronaut in the next class.

Dylos was reluctant at first. After some convincing by Penny to follow his dream, Dylos said goodbye to Colorado forever. He quit his job, re-enlisted in the Air Force to increase his cockpit time, and after a few refresher courses from Penny, Dylos was accepted as an astronaut.

He even married Penny who revealed she was a widow as her first husband died overseas.

Magnetic Disturbance:

Several weeks after Dylos was accepted into the program, a greenish-blue light appeared in Earth's Exosphere and proceeded to wreak havoc on Earth's satellites and communication hubs.

NASA sent several unmanned probes to study the phenomenon, all of which malfunctioned before they received any useful data. After weeks of testing the effects on organic matter, NASA found the disturbance didn't affect humans and scrambled a manned-mission to the disturbance.

Scrapping the Odyssey-Nine mission to the ISS, Dylos and the crew from the Odyssey-Nine were sent on this mission (with Terrence Philips as mission commander).

After a malfunction during the Odyssey-Eight test flight, Dylos received a reputation around NASA as being Penny's charity case. And due to budget cuts, the next astronaut knocked off active duty would most likely never go back to space.

Eager to prove himself, he petitions to be made him mission commander, given his background in material processing and his quick thinking. Paige, Brianna Cargill (his FAO officer), and the board reconsider and made him mission commander (with Philips as Science Officer, Paige Smith as Pilot & Dr. Cecile Akintos: Cal Tech's Environmental Sciences and Engineering Chair as a passenger).

Ignoring the initial readouts affecting their trajectory farther away from the disturbance (diminishing the accuracy of their readouts), Dylos made a few last minute changes; which result in the events of the series.

Within the Hellecian Sector:

Landing in the Hellecian Sector without his crew and few details of how he got here, Dylos resolves to escape the shipyards with the help of AJM-001 & Eucidrie aboard The Psygorellius. Aboard the ship, Dylos is second-in-command (to his disappointment) and advises AJ what to do. While also discreetly manipulating AJ to do what he wants, when Eucidrie isn't.

However, Dylos debates with himself constantly on whether he'd rather return home as a disgrace to his wife/colleagues/country or remain dead.

Eucidrie talks him into returning home, saying he'd be the first astronaut to go beyond his solar system and return home.

All throughout their adventures, Dylos is the voice of reason and science. Where the other crew members see gods and magic, he sees quasars and atoms. However, his understand also gets subverted from time-to-time based on his previously unknown ability to emit and/or diffuse Cosmic Aurora on the same level as Eucidrie.

All the same, Dylos uses his material processing background and quick thinking to get the Psygonauts out of sticky situations when AJ's brawn is unavailable or unable to overcome an obstacle in their path.

However, his role on the Psygorellius over the course of the series seems to have more of a purpose than is lead on by UHP Rector Dysomus.
