Valley of Mjona

Geography

The vale is nested between high snow crusted peaks, as the wyverns soar high on the wind blown clouds that flow around those mighty summits. As those lazy puffballs glide over the slow sloping hills edging a meandering river. The river flows from the numerous mountain streams that sink below the ground long before they make their way to the channel proper. Before gushing out as crystal clear springs that bleed slowly out of the surrounding hills and glades.

The river Hjkrha flows out of the large crater lake far to the south. A shallow braided stream that constantly shifts its position from season to season. The valley proper is a vast grassland of scattered wildflowers and wild mountain poppies. Before returning to a sandy and gravelly flood plain that only the hardiest scrub persists year after year. The river valley deposits it's waters into two other tributaries to form a horrifyingly fast and rough mountain stream as it makes its roughly hundred mile journey to the sea. The vale extends past it's flood plain up to the crook of the mountains Ternoth and Majestet.

Ecosystem

The vale is home to a multitude of small mammals such as voles, shrews, rabbits, and fox. Though all are equally hunted by the small juvenile Wyverns that live in the mountains to the east and west. A fascinating balance that keeps all parties involved at stable levels. Wolves once lived here, but were outcompeted and moving to the crater filled fields to the south by the Wyvern Matriarchs and their broods.

Though the main dominating creature to wander these grass filled seas are the War Boars, these are the keystone species of the vale. They service the plains by constantly rutting through the grass hunting any small creature they can get their teeth on, leaving the ground soft and much more malleable for other creatures to tunnel into. From the ground dwelling Owls and hawks, to the seed loving song birds that compete for the piles of dirt they leave behind, to the very creatures they hunt benefit when the Herds move through an area.

Fertilizing the earth as they move, continuing the cycles that have eons laid their souls into the stones beneath their feet. While they are not strictly carnivorous, they do love to eat the small trees and bushes that attempt to plant their roots in the bed of the river. As such they keep the valley an meadow that spans for hundreds of miles, by eating the fledgling trees they also ensure that the river never has a permanent position either.

Localized Phenomena

Rain is actually quite rare in the valley, being hidden behind the shadow of the mountains and their westward winds from the seas. So as such when rain does find it's way over the mountain peaks, usually with the help of a humid southernly breeze from the crater fields, it is a strange affair for the region. Much of the water is kept only a few feet below the soft loamy soils, the plants and animals never wanting for an easy water source. These rains come in a strange way due to the way the wind falls into the valley of the mountains.

A vast fog descends into the vale, obscuring even the tallest towers built by the Dwarves who watch over the valley. As the fog grows denser, these low clouds rain in a constant light drizzle. Rain doesn't so much fall here, as it so much appears in magical blending of filtered light and shifting shadows. Occasionally catching stray beams of light that fill the fog with a dazzling kaleidoscope of refracted colors.

Natural Resources

The Dwarves aggressively defend the entire vale through a number of watchtowers and underground systems. As well as a massive runic array that is purpose built foe eradicating an invading force. They value the vale for a few different reasons, should you ask any random Dwarven Citizen, they would tell because it is a beautiful place to see the skies framed by the loft bones of the earth. In a more practical sense, the vale is a massive shooting gallery for the City of Mhzuchet, the city at the end of the valley is poised perfectly to take advantage of the long path leading up to the Citadel.

Many armies have fallen in these placid fields, for the earth soak up their blood as quickly as it is spilled, as if nothing ever happened there. Bodies hidden in the tall grass to become the continuation of life in the vale. The Dwarves found a proverbial gauntlet to protect their home, their only home. They also found that the War Boars themselves are rather quite intelligent. The Boars themselves valuing strength and honor in adversaries, as such the Dwarves and their heavy stocky frames were worthy opponents to test themselves. Though, the Boars would ultimately become domesticated and herded by the Dwarven race, the Herders and Mercenaries still need to prove themselves to every new piglet born into the world.

The Vale is the only known place that they will breed, as such the vast herds are incredibly well protected, they serve as food, as beasts of burden, as companions, and weapons of war for the Armies of the Dwarven State. Powerful brutes they are, fall easily they will not.
