Ternoth

Geography

Ternoth is the name of the largest mountain flanking the Westward mountain ridge of Mhzuchet. A craggy mountain peak that was elevated by and additional hypothesized twenty thousand feet during the impact that created the Isle of Mhuzelt. The mountain exhibits clear delineations of habitat. The bottom third of the mountain is covered in the wild grasslands of the Valley of Mjona. A gentle slope upward until the much sharper angle to the mountain proper.

It turns quickly with altitude to a alpine pine forest that continues skyward for approximately nine thousand feet. Where the jet stream quickly turns all rain and cloud cover into snow. Leaving the highest part of the forest to be a world in stasis. Cold, slow, time seemingly to have no meaning as the growing season is only a month long. Though these pines are a strange breed, despite being pines and evergreen, they are considered hardwoods for their dense growth structures.

The top third of the mountain is a snow frosted monument to solitude. The wind erodes the glaciers far more than the sun does, snow falls are common, avalanches are extremely rare due to the cold and thin air. To those with the stones to try and summit this god of stone, a strange sense of peace is felt here.

History

Ternoth is one of two. Part of the same geologic structure as her sister mountain Majestet. Created during the same orogeny, this dense metamorphic basalt claims the title of the highest peaks on The Great Tree. When the Dwarves found their home in the Valley, they looked on these watchers, and felt a deep respect for them. They hid them from the storm of the Mhuzelti Sea, they channeled the threats of Dwarves into an manageable form, they offered shelter to the herds they lived on, they were the new gods of the Dwarves.

Though a memory remained, a time from long ago. A name they knew, a map they had found. Tattered and ancient a name stood out brighter than the landmasses of this chart. Taneth The Navigator and his maps never showed these mountains. Never showed these sanctuaries, never gave any indication to this place. They named the mountain after the creator of the maps, and updated them to show the true nature of the Northern Wastes.

Each Dwarf is encouraged to make the pilgrimage to the summit of both mountains, to worship at the shrines of forgotten gods at some point in their lives. Yet the kings of the Dwarves undergo this journey every ten years to renew their vows to their clans, and to not undergo this trial of hardships is to relinquish their kingship.
