Necropolis
The gates? Oh my, how are we mistaken, from the maps we have... ehrm... acquired from that place. It's another tower that descends deep into the earth as it exits out into other levels. When you reach the bottom of the tower, you can find that unholy place below the ruins. To be honest, I think if the residents of Skjalich were willing to let us excavate the earth around the gate, we'd find a platform. Something we would find very familiar in our own dirigible docking platforms. I believe those ruins were once on the surface, now buried in the Ash Stone that blankets the continent. ~Commentaries on Skjalich by Professor Hiberarch of the Galacian Historical Society.
Geography
The Necropolis is a vast underground area that suffered a great Calamity, as the entire floor of this great Cathedral is covered in the bones of many hundreds of thousands of unfortunate souls. The bones that litter this place are by no means human, but bear a disconcerting similarity to them. Some massive humanoid bodies are used as waypoints in the vast graveyard. Their bodies being surrounded by many others with warped and twisted forms, as if their bodies in life were forcefully changed. These giants have had torches planted in their heads and are used ostensibly like lighthouses.
Much of the graveyard consists of one hall with a large tower in the center, one that reaches up into the Ash Stone that makes up most of the bedrock of the Peninsula of Galus. Though one coming here would be hard pressed to call this place anything except an abyss, for the darkness swallows all but anything withing lantern light. The necropolis has had extensive mapping done by the denizens of Skjalich, who, if convinced, would show you. Even entering the ruins is a task very few have successfully done.
The graveyard does have walls, but they just happen to be miles apart. Numerous columns dot the great structure to support the high vaulted roof, many of which were found with what is assumed to be some sort of lighting system. But, without the knowledge of how to turn the system back on, they have become makeshift lanterns that the residents faithfully keep lit with anything they can burn. Dotting the walls can be found numerous rooms that house strange, arcane instruments, as well as what could be understood as a generator of sorts. Though it is a technology far more advanced than what modern information can operate.
The tower houses an unusual sight, a Portal Nexus. Though, because the Wayfare Guild has never been given permission to enter the ruins, its function is unknown. Surrounding it is a ring of skeletal Guards of inhuman origin that still stand as they had in death, odd weapons not dissimilar to modern firearms, though the residents dare not explore the tower much at all. At the head of this Chamber sit four thrones. Empty, save for the V'heild at times.
Ecosystem
Stagnant air is only found here as the lantern fires burn what precious little oxygen can be found here. The gates of the ruins remain open at all times to allow for the air to force its way down, keeping the atmosphere just barely breathable. Where it escapes to is unknown, though the numerous pipe works in the structure are believed to exit somewhere, as many of them are sucking air in. There is precious little life in the dark, save for the odd spider and pale lizards that enjoy the cool environment. They only inhabit the upper layers of the ruins, as deeper down, only the residents make any claim to life.
The only other things that wander the halls are ghosts that hum constantly. While the V'heild is seen from time to time, the residents do not think that she calls this place home. As she is seen far more in the Ancient Forest, which surrounds the ruins.
