Ash Stone

Properties

Material Characteristics

A highly dense material for sedimentary deposits, nearly as dense as granite though still retains a physical grain to it. It is a similar to silt found at the bottom of fossilized lakebeds, a very fine grain to the material. Its pale blue color has made it a popular stone for decorative work cross the world, though holds a few unique properties to itself that no other stone identifies.

Though the stone is easily identifiable by any novice geologist, even a great number of lay people care able to pick it out from the ordinary surrounding. It is always found as a sudden change from the layers around it, typically found sitting a top a metamorphic layer, proceeded directly by much looser sedimentary deposits on top of that that display the usual browns and greys typically associated with sedimentary stones.

Physical & Chemical Properties

This is not a load bearing stone, it crumbles easily under and significant weight, thus leaving it only useful for exterior purposes and accent pieces. Due to it's small grain structure it displays two popular methods of finishing. The first being an ultra smooth surface that is capable of reflecting light just as well as polished marble, the other being when exposed to an open flame for more than a few hours it takes on a crystalline structure, making it usual material for making cheap glass.
Though, its most notable effect is this, it is highly reactive to certain Magics. Many of the temples and monasteries of the world have elements built into them with a large amount of this material to indicate when one of The Eight Divines is present. The stones glow with a, some might describe eerie, azure light. Though this effect has also been noted to activate by those with exceptionally powerful abilities. Gjorn Fourth king of Dwarves, God's Eye Odeza, The Sage of Huron: Emily Von Eule, Ilgor of the Skullbrood Clan are known modern examples of mortal beings able to trigger the effect.

Origin & Source

While there are many theories of how the entire planet was covered in this material, there are no real answers. The most prevailing theory is that there was a large volcanic eruption that coated the surface in the material, though this is hotly debated as the amount of ash that would need to fall would have caused an extinction of unimaginable proportions, there has never been a fossil found in this layer of rock.

The other theory is that the ash fell during the The Hammer fall. When the Isle of Mhuzelt had formed its mountain peaks, the event caused the layer to form. Though this is also debated as well, we know full well a fairly accurate date of when this event occurred, and it was far later than this layer of rock.

When the skies died, when the sun was swallowed by the raven. When the seas stilled and logic and balance abandoned this place. Did the darkness burn the world, those Shadows to reap what they had sown. No matter how hard one tries to hid the sins of the past, do we realize there is always something watching. Memory having faded, the truth far off on distant skies, did The Four suffer their folly. As ash drifted from the skies to coat obscure the eyes of the ones who might live to see the truth once again.

Very enjoyable read!

Realised i should probably elaborate a bit lol. I like the multiple theories that the people have of the origins of the stone layer. I also like that it is reactive to magic and glows in the presence of powerful magic users. It would be such a cool sight to see a temple light up in an azure glow when a particular person enters!

I'm glad you liked it! I had fun coming up with theories that sounded possible in the world, but ultimately only a few certain people actually know. I wish I had the color talent to make a glowing temple happen, but who knows one day that sight might get an actual image!

May you find the truth as it billows through the branches...
