Multilateral Portal

"And who are you? Was the regiment of soldiers necessary?" Gjorn requested as his revolver was taken from his belt, as well as the short broadsword.

"Well, I don't find you all that threatening beyond what you are. You have to understand the last time any of us have dealt with one of the Shadow Touched, they were quite contagious." The emerald haired fairy said as she pulled some sort of gas mask, ringed with subtle runes, over her face.

"Alnya didn't have any issue with me, so why does everyone else?" He asked, hands raised as they drew a complicated arcane circle around him.

"While Mother doesn't discourage us from using her name, I'd prefer if you didn't. It's a matter of respect, only her own Children, the Fae, do so with such casualness." She spoke as she conjured a small fire in her hands.

"She called me one of her own, if I do believe. I will continue to do so regardless of your prejudice against me." Gjorn spoke with the air he would use in the courts of the Federation.

"That she has, yet we need to test if you know anything that could be harmful." Touching the complicated runic circle, it lit an eerie glow as his shadowy figure solidified into what he would have looked like back on the Tree.

"What is your name?" He asked, as he felt something pull at his mind.

Effect

Opens a series of small portals at a maximum of seven, along a fixed set of points where their end points are set along a desired target(s). The caster is typically very combat oriented, at least in physical mediums, favored extensively by swordsmen and gunslingers alike for its rather unique properties. This spell is one of the oldest ones created by the Guild before it was ever going by the name Wayfare. Typically the destination portals are targeted at whoever is being fought, though multiple targets can also be chosen.

For a caster using a blade, a section of the blade is targeted by entrance portals to hit targets with its momentum striking an opponent along their body. Though, can be countered as soon as the target knows what is happening, reaction time is critical. By moving out of the way, much of the damage can be negated, or conjuring enough raw force to deflect the blade in the casters hand is enough as well. In effect a different section of one blade can hit a target(s) in multiple locations. Though, casters trying to finish fights quickly will typically strike arteries and vital organs.

Gunslingers will use the spell to a slightly different degree, most of these casters favor multi-shot/buckshot or multi-round firing mechanisms. The caster will open a series of entrance portals in front of one of another and close them as each round enters, a trigger mechanism is usually built into the spell to close automatically as soon as a dense enough object enters it. The caster will have opened the destination portals to be directed at the target(s). In effect making a single short series of shots to come from multiple directions, making cover ineffective. This eliminates the need for precise marksmanship, when a portal can just be opened a few inches away from the target.

Manifestation

Luckily for those the spell is being used against, these portals have a silvery ring around them in direct sunlight. At night however, an opponent may never even see them, or even know what is happening. In daylight, it may seem like an odd thing to see various pieces of reality shift to show a different scene in small openings, yet it is a dead give away.

Discovery

Much of the spell construct is adapted to work on The Great Tree, as its original environment was far different. An existence that radiated the Song's Afterglow to a much higher degree. The original version was not as limited to the number of portals, or even size. These portals were also capable of being opened inside anything, necrotic/living flesh included.

The Original spell was developed first by Vilorlith and her Brownies. When the war with the Shadows rang out in full force, the Legion of Syn adapted the spell for exclusively military use. As even a Child of Syn, powerful and destructive in their own right, could have their power be felt across a much wider field of battle. Where one soldier could keep down a swarm of Shadow Touched, with these portals active they could keep down a proverbial sea of them.

The issue with this spell is that it takes roughly a second and half to set up, more than enough time for a competent opponent to react. These portals also cannot be targeted inside of living material, due to the limitations of the original version of the spell. It can be lowered in casting time with enough practice, but it is not foolproof. Used when engaging in small encounters, as most casters who know how to use this spell are typically uncommon inside the Wayfares. Most Wayfares did not come from military or law enforcement backgrounds, though those that have, are usually the last thing someone will see if attempting to fight them.

This is a cool mix of magic and world-building. The spell adds depth to the characters and their powers, and the tension between Gjorn and Odeza keeps things interesting. I like how the spell has a backstory and was adapted for military use.

Glad you like it! The Wayfares are an interesting aspect of the world! Shrouded origins with hidden agendas, but are a prominent presence in the world! Gjorn is the first type of "other being" seen in the Elsewhere, so a lot of the characters are very uneasy

May you find the truth as it billows through the branches...
