Otto Van Kan

Captain Otto Van Kan

Otto Van Kan was the son of a fisherman born into a poor but strong family. Growing up Otto was fascinated by the sea and would always spend his days at the docks listening to any sailor or fisherman that had a story to tell. During the long winter nights, Otto would sneak into the pubs around the docks and listen to drunk sailors sing and tell tall tales. When the nights would end he would find his father and help him stumble home. When he turned 14 his father allowed him to join a merchant crew that ran spices up Hangman's River to the Isle of Stone.

Personal history

Born into a poor family, Otto knew that he would one day join a crew and work his way up to be a captain. When he eventually joined a merchant crew at 14, he quickly learned that the most dangerous runs were the most profitable. On his first voyage up Hangman's River, over half the crew died from sickness and unnatural causes. When he returned home a month later, he didn't speak for over a week. His parents thought that the journey had broken him. His mother left his father for allowing him to let their son go on such a dangerous journey. When he finally spoke he told his father they should refit his fishing ship and the two of them could run spices up to the Isle of Stone. Seeing the determination in his sons eyes, his father sold their home to refit the ship and buy as much spices as the small ship could hold.   For four years Otto and his father ran spices up Hangman's River and to anywhere else no one would dare to go. They eventually would expand the fleet and establish the Van Kan Family as a merchant family. They would focus on transporting smaller shipments to unknown and dangerous areas that few would go. After the family became more established, Otto would head out on dozens of adventures to different unexplored regions of Uper Brahru & Antauustret.
