The Red Devils

Although the Thunderbirds take priority when salvage is discovered that can be used for advanced flight systems, a small group of enthusiasts have found a way to join them in the sky with antique flying machines. Considered outdated and even silly by the mighty Brother of Steel, these bi-planes and rigid airships serve a myriad of lesser jobs to conserve resources. They can be launched directly from the platform but must default to the Thunderbirds for specifics on the timing of their departure to avoid collisions.

Usually tasked with reconnaissance, they scout ahead, behind, and around the Crawler to ensure nothing is sneaking up on them. The fleet also acts as a courier system, carrying messages across the wastes for the First Citizens or anyone else with the proper capital. Typically airborne already when slavers or mutants attack, it is usually the Red Devils that serve as the vanguard for the Crawler while the Brotherhood spin up their vertibirds.

They paint their planes bright red to stand out against the storms and make landings easier. Each one is hand built, hand painted, and a bit unique as compared to the rest. This requires a list of complicated motor skills and intensive studies. The increased risk is rewarded with a higher wage, and when a period of five years is reached, a coveted endorsement for the First Citizens Council triennial exam is granted for demonstrating these abilities.

Mission Statement

Although directives are passed from Thunderbirds, the First Citizens ultimately run the Red Devils and decide on how to achieve these objectives. Much less strict in general conduct, they adhere to a rank structure to keep confusion to a minimum during operations. Disobeying an order given by a Thunderbird is forgivable, failing to adhere to one given by a First Citizen can get a pilot grounded long term.

Defense of the Vault Crawler is priority one, however there are many ways this is interpreted. Serious missions require the more reliable vertibirds, thus the Devils end up with most of the reconnaissance and other grunt duties. This does not mean they avoid danger, at least as many pilots are killed in vanguard assaults to buy time for the Thunderbirds to deploy as from mechanical failures in the unusually harsh environment.

Delivering and retrieving objects and important messages often falls to the Red Devils. This ranges from simple courier missions to collecting objects or resources desired by the Frist citizens Council.

The Red Devils may work under the Thunderbirds but they answer ultimately to the First Citizens Council.

Although treated like grunts, the Red Devils carry out their duties to the letter for the Brotherhood so that they can continue to operate out of their airstrip.
