Croak, The Night's Eyes

Croak is an incredibly thin bullfrog eadarling from The Night City of Dorchar. He used to be a journalist and would catalogue the world that Dorcha couldn't see, but he became trapped underground after a terrible deal from The Oni was accepted.

History

As The Oni

Not much is known about Croak beyond the fact that he was chosen as the new leader of Tympi's Forest after her disappearance. Before this he was on her court and a respectable member of said court. He, and the other leaders of the forest, made up the original Tympi's Court before her disappearance. The election of Croak and the creation of the new court after Ilven departed caused further distress to the original group.   Strangely enough, Croak was the only member of the court that was not known to be the leader of anything. The eadarlings did not recognize him as anything more than an oddity and a respectable member of their societies, but neither group considered him their leader. If he was anything, he was a bridge between the two Eadarling societies and still acts as such from time to time.   As of the modern day, Croak is still the leader of Tympi's Forest after the past 50 years and acts as a guide for any mortals that find their way into this realm lost and confused.
Croak has been assisting the Spiritual Travelers in their quest to study this land. He showed Namina how to make a basic protection circle for their camp, DAN the flower Ulunor's Bloom (which can be used for many different medicinal purposes) and some species of Ginseng at Anthony's request, and he showed the rest of you several dangerous locations and points of interest at Kaswink's request. That same night he also had a rather unfortunate argument with Frode regarding future relationships between this forest and Frode's own kingdom.   He came to the Spiritual Travelers with hopes that they would help remove the Spirit of Christmas from this forest when it was apparently trapped somewhere nearby and causing several problems. Thanks to his foresty magic, the group was able to return to camp while incredibly exhausted and cold.
When the Spiritual Travelers hoped to find Tympi, Croak came to their aid once more to help them into The Hidden Village of Mothlights. He also provided further assistance by helping them leave when they felt they had learned all they could.   Croak has been absent from their lives since helping them leave the village, and the group of outsiders have managed to make it through several challenges on their own without their guide present. He has been the subject of debate, however, as Ilven answered any questions about him negatively.   Croak was brought up again by Kaswink as she was asking an Eadarling barista what she knew of him. The barista provided what information she could in exchange for some stories and items from Kaswink. Apparently Croak is "not of the Day", though, according to his barista, if he is "of the Night" he should not be walking during the day. She isn't sure what Croak is, but she knows he isn't an Aotri Eadarling. He could be of the Dorchar and just have a special ability to exist during the day somehow, or he could be something completely different.
Croak was spotted in the "future" on an indeterminate date just before the Spiritual Travelers fought the Whendigo. He was transformed into a form similar to Kaswink's own hybrid form, and claimed that he was just a victim like she is. However, Kasink also has some Cursed Knowledge about this:   Cursed Knowledge
"You have already found the one that has a hold of your heart. You have a piece of them in a jar, a bullfrog, and a hag that is a friend of the forest. It has many forms and many personas. Be careful when you seek it out, and know that my General is hungry for power beyond its normal means... power that only I should have or be capable of having."

Croak appeared in Kaswink's visions while she was making her way to the center of Thera Relovut. He was fully transformed, but his face looked more like a combination of Kaswink's and her Grandfather's. He mostly laughed with the Oni's voice and attempted to her Kaswink's friends.   He was seen again at the center of the camp, still transformed, but with a far less menacing personality. He offered to help and asked what was going on, but Kaswink cut his belly open and killed him. He fell over, and, as the chasms opened up, he fell deep into the ground.

As Croak

The Spiritual Travelers uncovered a strange dungeon underneat The Daytime Village of Aotri. They found a starved bullfrog that matches Croak's description. He was covered in scars and open wounds, dried, caked on dirt, and he could barely breathe. When Namina tried to heal him, most of his wounds closed up, but a new one also began to open on his stomach.   Kaswink was able to break th chains of this Eadarling, and the only words he spoke as he was pulled up to the sun by Hysteria were "Finally, it's been so long..."   After saying these words and seeing the sun, Croak vanished. Hysteria was unable to find him, and it was debated amongst the group if he had ran away, gone invisible, teleported, or just stopped existing. Kaswink was able to find Croak by creating some magical darkness around him, but he had the appearance of an ordinary bullfrog. He was very sleepy.   Kaswink kept Croak hidden in this darkness until nightfall. Aotrom seemed to have no knowledge that anyone was down there or that the space even existed. She also seemed unfamiliar with Croak as a person in general.
Croak transformed back into a scarred, emaciated, bleeding-to-death frog man as the sun set. Kaswink was able to see him stretch back out into his humanoid form, and she dropped her concentration on the magical darkness so that the rest of the group could see Croak and heal him. He was thankful but had no idea who any of you were.   He explained -over a pattymelt and some coffee- that he had no idea what had been going on on the surface for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Since Tympi always knew Croak as an eadarling that could exist between both night and day, Croak must have succumbed to the Oni's deal over 3000 years ago.   Croak was apparently a journalist of sorts. Since Dorcha couldn't see much of the world with all the clouds hanging over it, she adored Croak for his bravery and willingness to go out and tell her about all the things she can't see. Croak, however, desparately wanted to see what happened during the day, so he accepted a deal presented to him by a "chained woman or something, i don't know, it was a long time ago."   The Oni tricked Croak, obviously, and he was chained up underground while the Oni traveling the world with a magical duplicate of his body. While chained up, Croak would experience all the pain and suffering inflicted on the Oni's version of Croak. The Oni also apparently would dance in front of Croak in different forms to torment him. Some of these forms included people he loved being killed over and over again, or a "tall, muscular figure that always wore a mask."   Croak never got to see the night or the day sky again for the next several thousand years. He did finally get to see the sun and the sky, but he vanished soon after due to him still not being able to exist in that way during the daytime. Kaswink noticed something with her Resonance Eye as well about Croak: His ankle is still chained to The Oni. The chain itself has the appearance of "low opacity, black, jagged rime ice".

Physical Description

Body Features

As the Oni
Croak is a short, wide, bullfrog-like humanoid and a member of the Eadarling species of fae. The majority of his body is a forest green color with the occasional collection of small bumps and black dots while his underside is mostly an off-white color. His eyes are orange with the usual frog sideways black pupil.   While affected by The Spirit of Christmas, Croak was a wind-up toy bullfrog of similar coloring though without the humanoid features. He had three sections of peeling paint on his head, and came up to about Frode's hip in terms of height.
As Croak
Incredibly thin, emaciated, anorexic and covered in different scars that the Oni Croak body experienced. Still a bullfrog, green with a white underside.

Special abilities

As the Oni
Croak, unlike other Eadarling, does not seem to obey the same rules as either Dorchar or Aotri do. Rather than vanishing at sunrise/sunset he seems capable of existing during both times... this provided valuable communication and trust building between the two factions of Eadarling during Tympi's rule.   Like other Eadarling, Croak is capable of assuming a frog form wherein he can transform into a slightly larger than normal bullfrog with the same coloring as his Eadarling form. He also shares the Eadarlings amphibeousness.   He also seems to have the ability to gain knowledge from the senses of others as he read Frode's contract while holding DAN's head.
As Croak
As his normal self, Croak is just a normal Dorchar Eadarling with a great deal of bravery. He spent his years traveling as a journalist to tell Dorcha everything she couldn't see.
