Personal history

Childhood (1017-1035)

Artebrand, or Arty, was born to the Knight Kavalyre Winters in Argo, though his mother was not Argian. His conception with a stranger remained - and remains - a mystery though it was enough to disgrace his mother.   When Kavalyre was sent away to Kehl to fight the Bullfolk, Arty was taken with her and thus his first memories are of Kehl, though they left again when he was 3 years old for Chevry. Arty spent his years in Chevry, though he was often remarked upon as being a timid and shy child.   In 1025, at the age of eight, Arty's mother enrolled him in the Knight training she was overseeing. Arty begged and cried for days to be withdrawn, but ultimately was not. By the time the War of Northern Independence broke out in 1030, Arty was a competent rider, if not an average swordsman.   Arty was relieved when his mother stayed home to direct war efforts from Chevry, but more so because he himself did not want to go to war. By the time of his fourteenth birthday, Chevry was free and his mother was in charge. Arty was given the best tutors imaginable by his mother, who now ruled in name, and the discovery of his connection with ice was exposed, giving him an edge in combat that made him feared.

A Free Knight (1035-1037)

He was inducted into the Free Knights of Chevry at eighteen, though many complained Arty was not actually good enough and had come by the opportunity as a result of nepotism. Two years later, Arty duelled a nay-sayer, accidentally slaying him. Kavalyre had him publicly apologise to the family of the slain man and gave them power of jury over him. They exiled him, and Kavalyre passed the judgement, though limited it to five years.

Exile (1037-1042)

During exile, Arty travelled around The Frontier with a secret identity. He helped out the various colonies in skirmishes, missions and quests, earning himself a positive reputation throughout the colonies. He slew a great many beasts with his ice infused swordsplay. During these missions, he was believed to have met Galais Impasse, also in disguise, and rumours that they were lovers are abound even until today.

Return to the Knights (1042-1050)

Arty returned home to a frosty reception from the populace, but a warm one from his mother. They soon argued when Kavalyre refused to let Arty re-join the Free Knights. Artebrand took to doing charitable work around Chevry, including adopting a two year old girl named Roze from an orphanage.    She reconsidered in 1043 when a particularly large frost wyrm besieged the colony, and Arty slew it single-handedly. The families of the slain man from years earlier forgave him publicly, and he rejoined the Free Knights of Chevry. After that, Arty revealed his secret identity - tales of his heroism had spread even to the Isle of Chevry and Arty was embraced by his new brothers and sisters in arms.   Arty's new skills and heroism meant he ascended quickly up the ranks of the Knights by his own merits. He publicly refused to appear with his mother while representing the Knights, which earned him a great deal of respect. He even went so far as to change his family name to Wintersson, in honour of his mother.   When his mother was slain by another wyrm, the grieving Artebrand led an assault on the wyrm nest and, together with the Free Knights of Chevry, slew a winter dragon. He earned himself the nickname the Dragonslayer and was immediately promoted by a vote among the Knights to become Knight Captain.

Knight Captain (1050-1060)

Artebrand remained popular in Chevry, keeping the monstrous attacks at bay and negotiating alliances and agreements with aplomb. Though more roguish and mischievous than his mother, Artebrand has used this to his advantage to make new friends and allies.   Chevry has remained stable in the last decade. With the end to the wyrm attacks, Knight Captain Artebrand brought a new era of peace on the town. He renegotiated alliances with Qorte as their relationship frayed over time, as well as managed a visit from Capano Saranducci in 1058 in which no fists or insults were thrown. Artebrand agreed to co-operate with the Frontiersmen in the name of peace for the colonies.
