Argo

Argo is a large city in the south-eastern part of Kingdom of Red Veil. It is the seat of the Dukes of theHouse of Argo which is currently ruled by Arento Argo.   Argo is the twin city to Nero, held by House Argo's rivals, the House of Thasson-Montena.

Government

Duchy, under the Kingdom of the Kingdom of Red Veil ruled by the House of Argo.

Infrastructure

Argo has tall stone walls. There are a few impoverished hamlets and huts that linger outside of it, providing some mealy sustenance to the city. Beyond the walls, the city is split into four quarters, though they are of differing size and importance:

The Rotdock

The Rotdock is the eastern most district of the city that lies open to the sea.   The Docks: These docks have long since served the fisherman of the shallow waters as well as the few vessels of the old dukes. Since the construction of the Argian Harbour, they have fallen into disrepair and serve as more of the locals' docking point. As such, the neighborhood around Rotdock is host to fishmongers, guarded warehouses, flea-markets, and dens of iniquity.   The Crepscull: Rotdock's oldest tavern, noted as a hang-out for the Milkburned fisherman and other assorted low-lives.

Silversmiths

The cities smallest and newest district lies at the north east of the city, north of the Rotdock. It is home to newly minted wealthy merchants, artisans and artificers who are bloated with the new wealth of the Frontier pouring in through the Argian Harbour. Residences in Silversmiths are surrounded by upmarket taverns, theatres, counting houses and fashionable markets.   The Argian Harbour: The newly constructed Argian Harbour is the direct property of the Duke of Argo. It features space enough for several large warships, but is mostly attended by large trading galleons that bring in riches from the Frontier. The Duke's harbourmasters and taxmen patrol the Harbour with scrupulous accuracy.   Bank of the East: The biggest bank and counting-house in Argo, it stores large vaults of merchants' fortunes as well as countless treasures from the Frontier.   Luxilia's Lute: A tavern that doubles as a theater and performance space for artists, poets and bards.   Five Market: A market most famous for having been extended five times in the last five years to facilitate the growing trade there. It is a mix of crafted and exotic goods. Five Market is located in a large square next to the Bank of the East and is a sea of colored tents and covers.

Gateward

Home to the middle class, Gateward sits on the western side of the city and is centered around the Duke's Way Gate. Its houses are tall, narrow and made from well-kept stone, but there is very little space for recreation or joy here. Servants, landowners, minor craftsmen and store owners live here.   String Row: The central road leading from the Duke's Way Gate down into the Rotdock. It is lined with relatively cheap stores, blacksmiths, second-hand shops and farming supply shops.   Duke's Way Gate: Argo's only gate through its high stone walls, the Duke's Way Gate hosts carriage-encolsed nobles and bare-footed paupers alike.   Farboots: A boarding house for travelers. It is a bawdy inn full of low stools, cheap beer, travelling bards and comfortable beds.   Tower of the Silversashes: Headquarters to the Silversashes, the city guard, is located above the Duke's Way Gate.

Duca Heights

The central district of the city is the legal centre too. It houses nobility, judges, scribes and foreign ambassadors, as well as the very richest members of Argian society. It is set on a natural hill with wide paved roads, tall Redstone Brick structures, open plazas with fountains and a public park.   Fort of Argo: The Fort of Argo is the highest structure in Argo and it is visible for miles around. The home of the Duke and his court, it is a solid white stone fort of several spirals, tall pointed roofs, and its own set of private walls. Inside the Fort there are long twisting halls that function as galleries of historical artifacts. The duchal audience chamber is long and pretty narrow, forcing guests to walk down a long narrow purple rug. On the east wall of the throne room there is a set of stairs that lead upwards to the guest suites: light, airy apartments within the fort that overlook the city and the Milkwater.   The Solari Countinghouse: The oldest bank in Argo boasts the oldest vaults and best security. It is pillared in a faux-elven style and made of pure white stone. Inside there is a counter on the left side, while patrons lounge and eat on the right side. The upper three storeys of the countinghouse contain vaults and safes. Patrons are treated to cushioned recliners as they wait, as well as a dozen private dealing rooms in which to hold secret meetings or banking appointments.   Resplendent Market: Situated outside of the Solari Countinghouse, the Resplendent Market deals with all manner of fine objects such as silverware, furniture, glassware and even artifacts from the Frontier. There are no actual market stalls here, but rather a circle of ornate stores. Tucked around the corner off the main market is the Magitech supplier in the city.   Descendant Temple: The largest and only public temple in Argo, it is circular with a domed roof. It boasts four huge statues of Batu, Coelle, Arta and Gaia, as well as temple gardens, rooms for the Apostle, his Deacons and the Novices.

Architecture

Buildings are usually narrow townhouses with pointed arched roofs. Lower quality residences make use of common grey stone, while upper class residences are primarily plastered white with different degrees of red stone bricks in their construction.

Geography

Argo juts out on a plain into the Milkwater, giving it strategic advantage as a port of call for trade going north or south. It is also the closest physical location to the Frontier and has the shortest sailing time.

Natural Resources

Argo is natural resource poor. It makes it wealth from trade, craft and the acquisition of exotic goods from the Frontier.
