Ophin Taldilindar, Arcane Prodigy

An earnest child of magics, he looks to the future with bright eyes and tales of heroism ringing in his ears

Ophin Taldilindar

Ophin Taldilindar is a young male Wood Elf who chafes at his adopted mother's control and longs for the adventure and romance of the open road. Reading stories of powerful knights and daring battles has instilled in him a brand of heroism that alternates between true altrusim and naivete. A friendly and sensitive soul, he is quick to render aid to any in need, but in his haste to do good oftentimes will oftentimes run afoul of trouble that was best left untouched. His adopted mother Daredrid would call him soft, and he scoffs at the notion, believing that kindness is not a weakness.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Ophin carries a slim build. He lacks the large hulking physique of a warrior, but rather is an agile combatant. He's constantly in motion on the battlefield, always ready to move at a moment's notice. Along his neck are a pair of jet black tattoos that shimmer as the light catches them.

Facial Features

Ophin has the common angular facial structure that most elves share, with pronounced cheekbones and a pointed chin. His face is clean shaven, and his angular blue eyes are so bright that they almost glow.

Apparel & Accessories

Ophin generally dresses in an odd fashion not seen in Faerun, wearing a fine shirt and vest with a tie, and sporting dark trousers and black shoes. At his side is a finely crafted rapier with a sapphire in the pommel.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

When asked about his history, Ophin blinks for a moment and is genuinely surprised at your inquiry. He cannot recall anything from his youth, and his memories begin roughly a decade and a half ago in a darkened cell many leagues from the Sword Coast. All he remembers is his adopted mother Daredrid Taldilinar with an adventuring party stumbling on him, weakened and near out of his mind with pain. In the days that followed the party took him in, nursed him to health, and Daredrid helped him to learn more about his gift of magic. Under her tutelage he has learned to twist the Weave to producing something akin to the Wizard's art, but somewhat different. Whereas the Wizard can maintain large repertoire of spells that must be prepared daily, Ophin can cast magic without needing any such preparations. The drawback of course, is that he is unable to expand his own spellcasting at will, and mentions it usually is something that only emerges under duress. In his downtime he is an avid reader, and has pored over many a tome of heroic derring do, which has developed into a desire to render aid anyone in need, without a moment's thought to the long term consequences.   For many years he stayed alongside Daredrid, assisting in her experiments and running her side businesses through the Red Wizard Enclaves. An unusually reclusive benefactor had reached out to Daredrid, and on retainer asked her and Ophin to safeguard the lives of the heroes. They earned their keep when the party finished their business at Wave Echo Cave, plucking the druid Reidoth out of a hostage situation while his mother attended to the party. Afterwards, Ophin would spend some time in Phandelin while Daredrid returned to tend to her businesses in Neverwinter. When Phandelin was razed, he joined the fray without question. Assisting the party in their retreat, he was also present when Vera was taken hostage. He played several key roles in Vera's rescue, initally using a Sending spell to communicate with her, and later on stealing a scroll of Scrying to locate her position. His magicks led the party directly to her captors, and he took the opportunity to pluck Vera from the melee. After ensuring her safety, he returned to the fray, and continued to support the fight against the mutated Bral.   After her rescue Ophin has generally made himself useful by manipulating the magical items they've found, twisting enchantments to make them more potent. He also enjoys the camaraderie of the group, and has surprisingly enjoyed the adventuring life more than he privately thought he would. His actions however, caught up with him swiftly. A few days after Vera's rescue, the Red Wizards moved against him. In public he was tried for, and he admitted guilt to, his part in stealing the scroll. The Red Wizards retreated, ominously proclaiming his sentence would fall soon. Later that day, he fell prey to a trap. Cut off from his friends, only Vera was able to step inside the shimmering prison that held him, and even then she could only watch helplessly as two Red Wizards performed a ritual that branded him with the marks on his neck. He later recalled it being the worst pain of his life, the feeling of not only physical pain, but of something inside him being torn away. Mercifully his agony was short lived, and as swiftly as the pair had attacked, they retreated and left him among his friends.

Education

Ophin's education that he can remember comes entirely from poring through Daredrid's private library, in particular he has thoroughly studied the process of imbuing magic into items. Although he has had no formal schooling, the libraries he has visited are vast, and he devours new information as quickly as it presents itself.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Primary Party

Bixiris "Bix", Toxicologist Extraordinaire - Ophin has a healthy respect for Bixiris' skill with a dagger, and also for being one of the more level headed members of the party. He considers her an older sister and trusts her - though he does wish that her go to response for most problems didn't involve murder.   Pomli Sassafras, Circle of the Shepherd - If Bixiris is the older sibling, Pomli is the younger. He's frequently on his guard around her for her latest prank, but her command of nature and her healing powers have pulled him from the fire on more than one occasion. He is also amused at her sketches, specifically how much the gnome... exaggerates her drawings.   Ravera "Vera" Moonglade, Twilight Cleric of Selune - Vera's ability to switch from front line fighter to spellcasting prodigy captures his respect, and he finds her general selflessness in line with his own impulsive brand of altruism. Her capacity to serve as the parties' core healer, combined with her generally soothing personality, are a compelling combination. While he has certainly relaxed and bloomed a bit now that he knows his feelings are reciprocated, he's still plagued by the nagging doubt that she deserves someone much better than he.   Kurik Everly, Battle Master - Ophin has spent many an evening feeding the seasoned mercenary drinks in exchange for war stories that he absorbs with wide eyed rapture. To him Kurik is a larger than life warrior true, even if he's a little rough around the edges. For a human, his sharpshooting skills put many an elf with many more centuries of practice to shame, and he hopes to one day attain a mastery of his own on par with the veteran.   Norixius Reke, Paladin of Bahamut - Ophin generally regards the dragonborn as an equal, despite their worlds apart. He respects Reke's tactical mindset in battle, and strives to attain a mastery of his own weapons that matches Reke's mastery of glaive and spear. The paladin's inclination towards non-violent resolutions also resonates with him; and he respects the dragonborn for being loathe to take a life unless it is truly necessary.

Supporting Cast

Charm Mirthshadow, Noble Scoundrel - Despite the fact that the pair couldn't be more dissimilar, each considers the other a brother true. The mischievous tiefling is always willing to try to push Ophin to expand his comfort zone a bit, while Ophin in turn offers a more level headed outlook. He is also close with his sister, Virtue, who refers to him as an "Uncle" - a title he carries with pride.   Cavus, of the Sapphire Fist - Cavus quietly offers Ophin what support he could need, whether that be brute strength, a sympathetic ear, a supporting word, or a cryptic riddle. Ophin holds the half-dragon in high esteem, even though he doesn't feel as though he fully understands him.   Lathox, War Cleric of Bahamut - Ophin is inwardly amused at the dragonborn's paradox. A cleric of war, who longs for peace and healing. She's remarkably easy to get along with, even if he does consider her a little too trusting for her own good.
