Loremaster
Loremasters are held in high esteem in the Coastal Realms for their knowledge and wisdom. They typically know something about nearly everything. And usually quite a bit about one or two subjects that fascinate them. Most nobles view it as a sign of status to employ a Loremaster as an adviser. Many Loremasters also explore the world in search of new or lost discoveries, magicks, and lore. It is not uncommon for a Loremaster to dabble in alchemy.
Career
Qualifications
Highly educated from a young age by an Elder Loremaster.
Career Progression
Novitiate - The period of childhood under the tutelage of an Elder Loremaster. Either individually or in a Collegium with several Novices under the guidance of a few Loremasters, with an Elder Loremaster overseeing the whole Collegium.
Journeyman Loremaster - After reaching manhood, and being deemed worthy, a young Loremaster sets off to travel the Realms to seek new knowledge and experiences.
Loremaster - A Journeyman earns the right to be called a full Loremaster after they secure an advisors position in some Lord's court. It is not unusual for a Journeyman to begin to go grey before achieving one of these postings.
Elder Loremaster - Those Loremasters who successfully survive deep into old age are well respected for the lifetimes of knowledge they have amassed. Out of respect for both their wisdom and their age, they are called Elder Loremasters.
Payment & Reimbursement
Loremasters earn a stipend from their lord patron, which is commensurate with the station of the lord they serve.
Journeyman Loremasters scramble to make coin during their travels by providing learned services to the common folk.
Novitiates often pay for their education, or have it payed for them by another party.
Other Benefits
Deep respect, and a lifetime of pursuing knowledge.
Perception
Purpose
Disseminate ancient or obscure knowledge through the lens of practical wisdom and experience for the betterment of mankind in general, and the Loremaster's patron in particular.
Preserve and study the grimoires of the long dead wizards that survived the Crossing. As Old World Magicks are unlearnable in this new land, seek a new form of scholarly magickal knowledge.
Social Status
Highly respected by nobles and commoners alike.
They are usually held in the same regard as nobility. Of course many Loremasters are in fact fourth or fifth children of nobility who happened to be sent to a collegium instead of a religious seminary.
History
Those educated individuals with the temperament and dedication to become wizards, in the face of wizardly magicks fading from the new world with every wizard's death, took it upon themselves to try to preserve the knowledge of wizards and The Old World. Eventually, because of their vast and seemingly unending knowledge, they began to be called lore masters. The description became a title, and a profession.
Over the preceding centuries, much knowledge of the Old World was lost or destroyed.
Loremasters now seek to preserve all of human knowledge, and use their understanding of that knowledge to help mankind thrive.
