Elven Vitae is a banned substance of great magickal potency. The secret to its production are assumed to have been destroyed long ago, but rumors sometime arise of some foolish necromancer or warlock acquiring some for their foul purposes, and the Elven retribution that comes down on them like a blacksmith's hammer on an anvil.
There are no rumors of Vitae production circulating at this time. But this belies the hidden truth that currently an unknown alchemist is actively distilling Elven Vitae from every Elf they can get their hands on for the sole purpose of creating potions of longevity. It is only a matter of time until this foul practice is discovered, but who will be the first to uncover this wrong-doing?

Distilled Elven Vitae is a viscous liquid of ineffable properties that glows with its own light. Each Elven soul is unique, so each batch of Elven Vitae is also unique in strange and subtle ways.
History & Usage
Discovery
A Loremaster, of an amoral bent and questionable sanity, discovered that the Elven lifeforce could be distilled into a potent magickal substance. In order to maintain the tenuous peace with the Elves, this Loremaster was put to death, and all copies of their notes were burned.
Everyday use
While Elven Vitae can be used to empower many magickal endeavors, it's most notorious use is in the creation of a life extending potion.
Refinement
The process of distilment requires a living Elf. Through unspeakable rituals and strange devices, the Elf's lifeforce is removed from its body and distilled down into the glowing viscous liquid known as Elven Vitae

Trade & Market
Even black-markets won't touch this substance. Few would tempt the wrath of the Elves. If there is a market for this, it takes place directly between the distiller and the end-user.
Law & Regulation
Human and Elven law both condemn the production and utilization of Elven Vitae. Elves seek out any rumor of its existence and kill all who hinder their investigation. Humans seek to quash these rumors, and their perpetrators, mostly to keep the Elves from beginning their "investigations." The third Elven War was started by such a rumor of Elven Vitae production.
