Witchstick

Emergency Cast

Written by Endrise

So you thought my collection of Witchsticks would be good wood material for your campfire? Guess you had a chance to see how these things work.
— Adventurer talking with their party

Witchsticks are a semi-common tool used by those that can't cast spells. Made from Witch Wood, each of the sticks provides people the ability to use magic to a lesser extent.

Burnable Wands

Portable Arcana

Witchsticks are wooden sticks the size of a pencil, decorated with sigils to signify their intended use. Often coloured in darker tones with prismatic colours shifting on the design.

They are fragile and quite flammable, weak enough to snap in someone’s hands and the lightest spark setting them off. Two traits that are useful for their purpose.

Magic in one's Pocket

When lit, Witchsticks make its Witch Wood release arcane energy, causing a wild variety of spells to go off. The sigil shows what spell might get cast and also its intensity. Some are small effects, others massive fireballs that can engulf whole rooms.

Its usage varies a lot depending on the spells it possesses, from utility-based casting to entertainment. Common usages include:

  • Fireworks
  • Campfire starters
  • Translation kits
  • Emergency disguises
  • Universal lockpicks
  • Combat tools
  • Survival tools

Safety & Regulation

Due to the dangers of Witch Wood, Witchsticks have several regulations across its trade routes. Not every type can be sold in regular stores without the permission of local authorities, if they are not outright banned.

Careless usage of these sticks causes collateral damage, usually by burning things to the ground. From lackluster storage to dangerous behaviour, every year some people end up in an accident because of these things. Either by being the one who lit the stick, or being on the receiving end of the stick.

An interesting idea for useful small magic for the non-magic user.
