Arcane University

The Arcane University is a well-renowned and very large school based in Solasheim. Its library has Syoll’s greatest collection of arcane knowledge, most of which has been recorded and compiled by the various students that have enrolled there. Next to the students and professors, the most powerful mages in Solasheim, who maintain the Beacon Tower also reside in the university’s quarters.

Studying at the Arcane University

The length of a student’s time at the Arcane University differ greatly depending on what they are studying. While certain subjects like Ethics of Sorcery or Arcane Zoology on average only take about 3 or 4 years, more complex subjects like Dunamancy or ones that involve strong ties to other planes of existence can even take decades to master. This causes there to be a strong pattern of longer-lived species (like elves) being much more common in complex magical subjects.
Courses at the Arcane University, however, are not usually divided into years. Instead, there are usually two obligatory and three more optional tiers of study that are to be absolved. Each tier has a list of requirements that must be met to advance to the next tier, but in what order or when the students do so is entirely up to them. After the second tier has been absolved, students can choose to receive their basic diploma or continue their studies (they can also return later and continue where they left off)

History

The Arcane University was constructed in 10 CY as part of an action to record information about Syoll and its people. While the arcane arts, were always a part of this, the shift only happened during the War of Frost. When Sognir and Rogna cursed Farathin, the mages of the Arcane University were faced with a unique challenge. They figured out how to make a magical flame that could keep the fog away, at least in the area where the university (and the fresh beginnings of a growing town) were located.
This caused a shift in the university’s range of courses, making it a much more magic-focused organisation. The curse even helped with this, since it caused the atmosphere around the university to teem with natural magical energy.
Over the centuries, the Arcane University gained a very good reputation and developed with the times. It was the only Solasi building to come out of the Doomsday Century completely unscathed, and even gave Solasheim its nickname: the Beacon.
