The Succession Ruby

The Succession Ruby is a famous gemstone from Magicians' End with a long and interesting history which reaches deep into the past.

Manufacturing process

in 9571 BPC, Yanavik Jecinth, the Senior Magician of Katrapetch cut and polished the Succession Ruby from a rough stone that had been found in the Katra Mountains of Punjuki and at the same time he enchanted it with the permanent special powers that would allow it to function within the Staff of the Raja where it was set in a broadly circular filigree as the focal point at the top of the golden rod.

History

The uncut stone that became the Succession Ruby of Katrapetch (very often simply called the Succession Ruby) was found or mined in the Katra mountains of Punjuki in a distant age that was probably around ten thousand years before the Planar Conformation.   After Yanavik Jecinth had enchanted it and set it into the apex of the Staff of the Raja in 9571 BPC, it was disturbed only once more whilst the Court Circle still governed Katrapetch. This was when the golden staff itself was recast, enriched and re-enchanted for the celebration that marked 10,000 years since the city was founded in 358 APC. The Succession Ruby was again set into the redesigned staff and continued to serve the same purpose until the disbanding of the Court Circle of Katrapetch under the Limit Protectorate.   When the Staff of the Raja was broken by Prince Rygarde in 5155 APC, the ruby was stolen by the Limit Prince. And after the Limit Protectorate was overthrown in 5184 APC, the great gemstone was not immediately recovered. For over three hundred years, it was presumed to have been lost to Magicians' End forever, with the commonly held belief that it had been taken to the Limit Lands by the retreating Prince Rygarde.   In 5494 APC, however, the famous ruby unexpectedly re-emerged to become one of the key stones in the Jewelled Queendoms, and once again a valuable symbol of royalty at Katrapetch but this time symbolising the authority of female rulers, when for so long it had served the patriarchy of the Rajas.   This phase of the gemstone's history lasted only until the Jewelled Queendoms were overthrown by Ixthamon, and this time it was thought that the Mad Mage had actually destroyed the ruby.   Once again though, it was recovered in the era of the Sacred Coven to be eventually passed down to their successors in the Alchemical Alliance. But now, the ruby which has so long been associated only with Katrapetch has travelled. It belongs to the Magistrad{o/a} of the Assembly and goes wherever they go. Sophia Oroquelle is its current guardian and the ruby is kept in her residence in the ancient Tinturbean city of Cynran.

Significance

The right of the Magistrad{o/a} of the Assembly to own the Succession Ruby serves an important political purpose within the Alchemical Alliance, acting as a not exactly subtle reminder to the ruler of Katrapetch, that as important as their city undoubtedly is within the Alliance, it is not the capital and it does not exercise authority over other Alliance cities. For this reason, the famous gemstone has not been returned to its ancient home and there are no plans for it to go back, despite the occasional half-hearted requests from important aristocratic inhabitants of the great Punjuki city.
