The Gene Sea

The Gene Sea is a name given to the alien members of an invasive ecosystem which spread over the Earth at the beginning of the Season Of Innocence. Very little is known about that time and even the things that are "known" are largely conjecture and legend. Since it is unclear why the Season Of Innocence itself was established by the Vow of Earth we cannot say with any certainty why the Gene Sea came to pass.   The most popular theory says that Earth's biosphere had been severely damaged by a terrible war or a terrible accident that gave rise to the glass lands, amongst many other catastrophes. According to this theory, the Gene Sea was a calculated measure to aid the restoration of native species. Another suggestion, however, is that the Gene Sea was actually a punishment for Earth, to make recompense for extinctions inflicted elsewhere due to careless spreading of earthly life forms within the Galactic Compact. Perhaps in some strange way, both these theories have an element of truth. We can never know.   Amongst the more successful members of the gene sea, we have the innobol trees that favour hostile northern climates, the alegoyle, those supreme aerial predators, the black spider wolves, the haunting mystish and the neowasps. In the ocean, the ptral became a common mid sized omnivore, hunting in packs and fulfilling a similar role to some exinct species of shark.   Illustrated above, is a forest of innobol trees with their near black trunks and characteristic spikey star like leaves.
