The Galactic Compact

The Galactic Compact is an all embracing term which tries to capture in one simple single phrase a variety of structures, organisations, treaties, agreements, enforcement agencies, diplomatic deals, regulatory bodies and terms of trade which taken together represent the collective political will of the numerous species that live and work together in a more or less harmonious interstellar society throughout our galaxy, operating on an inconceivably vast and inconceivably ancient scale. The Galactic Compact has changed many times over the long ages of its existence and it is nothing if not adaptable to a variety of philosophies and political moods, but a persistent sentiment is for the preservation of peace, security and cooperation between its members. In the long ages before the Season Of Innocence, Earth was a member of the Galactic Compact for an unknown length of time which is believed to be at least an order of magnitude greater than the entire known time line of the World of the Long Sleep. Retreating from the galactic community after the Vow of Earth, the world may have slumbered through the Great Forgetting but when it emerged again it found the Galactic Compact still ever present and ready to accept the planet back into the full life of the galaxy, albeit on a much humbler and greatly reduced scale. There are many mysteries about the Galactic Compact which remain vague in the new age, but contact was re-established in 1930 AF and working relations have continued on good terms to the present day.
