Archetypes in The Discontinuum | World Anvil

Archetypes

The archetypes are a range of realms within the discontinuum which operate on Laws of Form that can subvert the temporal constraints of the evolutions. They may borrow from other timestreams and they may mimic localised causality but they are bound by different rules. The archetypes can be dangerous places for Agents to travel.   There is a complicted relationship between archetypes and evolutions which is not fully understood. Archetypes seem to depend on evolutions for imaginary impetus and may have originally sprung to occupy neighbouring nodes within The Discontinuum only after one or more evolutions had sponsored their creation. However, evolutions also seem to rely on archetypes to anchor their position in the discontinuum.   It is possible for a realm to transition from an evolution to an archetype and visa versa, although these are rare and difficult state changes. The most notorious example of such an event in recent times, occured when the consumed world, travelling down a very dark historical path was invaded by an alien race originating within its own realm. The violent emotional energies unleashed by this catastrophe were exploited by an opportunistic malign Power (the Saturated Sting) to push the entire realm out of the set of stable evolutions to which it had once belonged and to turn it into a dreadful archetype.
