Order of Magi
The Magi are a race of immortal beings with immense metaphysical Authority. They were sent to the world by the Odists several centuries before the destruction of the Old World, to warn of the coming destruction and prepare the people for it. Their message was largely ignored. They helped the Empire resist the cataclysm, and showed the survivors the way to the New World.
Now they provide guidance and wisdom to the people of the Empire, and any others willing to accept their aid. They play a key role in preserving the imperial throne in times of strife, and make efforts to prevent the greatest excesses of secular rulership, with mixed success.
They are not human, but rather a race of immortal beings, who cannot be slain by mundane means. They all look very similar, appearing as old bearded men in hooded robes, their faces mostly obscured at all times. Due to their immense Authority, their mere speaking can affect The Rhyme, and thus alter the fabric of reality, and as such they remain silent when not using magic, communicating only with hand gestures and writing. There are only a few dozen of them in the world, with half residing in major cities, and the other half journeying throughout the countryside and wilderness to meet with outlying communities, and achieve esoteric goals.
Despite their stated goal of aiding humanity and the other rational races, the Magi are distrusted in many places. Notably, they were entirely expelled from the Commonwealth of Free Cities after its independence from the Kingdom of Eslond, for failing to prevent the Second Dark Age and the cataclysmic destruction that accompanied it.
