The Rhyme
The Great Poet (also known as The Author, The Creator, The Eternal Fire, and other names in various cultures) created the Rhyme from nothing. The Rhyme is, essentially, a poetic story so beautiful that it became real, forming the universe. Into the Rhyme he wrote various powerful beings, known as Odists, who were granted immense metaphysical Authority - the ability to influence the Rhyme. While most used their Authority to contribute to the Poet’s vision, a handful rebelled, seeking to impose their own will upon the Rhyme. As a result, it was tarnished, and made deficient, bringing evil into the world.
When humans and other rational creates were made, they were granted free will, and with it, limited metaphysical Authority. However, the first people sought to compose their own ballads, rebelling against the Poet, and falling into evil. Successive generations now must ever choose between seeking to use their Authority to help repair the Rhyme, or seek their own ends, damaging it further.
